They see it as disposal, you car is now taking up room and somebody will have to do something, that is, they need to arrange for someone to come and get your old car, Your paying for that time.
Somebody comes, gives them, say, £150 for it(yep ,paid twice) and then they will sell it on after lashing money out on it -
service - blow up tyres and leave dirty handprints on the engine cover.
Valet - wash it and put paper on the floor
and maybe a £5 carwash and polish with Halfords cheapest polish (or the £1 shops)

And swear the the wife has been using it, only to nip to town, never been trouble etc..
That's why it goes up. or maybe i'm a bit cynical.

Also the people who would have bought it for £700 traditionally are scared off by the high running costs of a old petrol engined car. I.e high road tax etc, so there is no incentive

Unless you unlucky and get disabled tax, Could use that bit to run an older car but then most will get a nice new tin box, not an ageing, luxurious, X40!

And as for the triple change auto boxes with the four speed reverse, I can't shift those for love nor money.
Be hilarious if you was p/x a car that was exactly the same, see what Bo!!ocks they came up with then.

It's come to a weird/scary time in our society when they reckon 60% of men below 25 don't know how to change a plug! WTF! I was getting electric shocks at 12! haha, coupled with the ability to be able to do less work on your own 'new' car and taken in by the 'this car will do 1,000,000 MPG' bo!!ocks, it's all a downward spiral! Or am I just being cynical? lol

I think its just the times v40chariot, i was lucky in some respects growing up one of 6 children and like most family's you didn't have alot of money so had to fix things yourselves, because my parents couldn't buy me a bike without buying for the other 5 that sort of situation.and i don't know if they do woodwork or metal work classes in schools these days, and of course there is a element today of keeping up with the jones's. Where i live they are like it lol i gurantee if i was to put a conservatry up next door would put one up in a weeks time lol.

I would be surprised if any showroom took your petrol S40 as p/x... charging you a disposal fee seems more than fair... only the very best top spec ones fetch over a grand so in terms of their time & space, your S40 is simply a burden

IMHO if you have the storage space offroad for a spare car, declare it SORN, cancel the insurance, and list it privately (eBay or on here), "priced fairly for quick sale", but take your time with it, wait for a serious buyer, and don't take the first offer that comes along. Chances are, someone won't steal it*, and the buyer would need to pay for VED anyway.

*at your own risk... suggest removing a spark plug cable.

The problem will really be at your doorstep `cos if you buy a more expensive car you will get more for yours as part exchange.......i think it is called swings and roundabouts!

Haven`t read all the above posts but to call a scrapyard and they collect you should get £250 if running.........i got £200 for a GDI not running as i did`t want to spend on it.
