Turbo ? Is this the end?
Having completed 276k plus, without a problem I think the turbo may have "blown". Above 2000 rpm there is a "shushing" and "rattling" (high speed rattle). The engine has very little power (could not pull a skin off a rice pudding) and is out dragged by a milk float. Important thing is "she" got me home from 100 miles away. The "battery" fault indicator comes on and off, at random but is now on all the time. I suspect the turbo has gone and would like some confirmation, or otherwise, from the excellent people on this great forum.
is it the turbo? Are the 2 faults linked? Is it a big job to change the turbo? Is it worth it, considering the car is in the twilight of life (like me)? But it has got 11 months MOT and had the handbrake completely rebuilt? Opinions/facts please, folks. Many thanks

You need to take of the tubo inlet pipe and physically check the shaft for movement but it does sound like the turbo has gone, but if the rest of the car is sound then in my opinion i'd fit a new or recon turbo, as for the battery light i can't help there.

Battery Light
I have hecked the battery voltages and it 13V with engine OFF and only 12.3 with engine running. Think this confirms the alternator has gone?

The battery light is there to tell you when the car is drawing it's power from the battery, not the alternator.
The alternator on my saxo died just last week and it was going to be £180 for a full price alternator or £130 for one that was on offer from euro car parts. Luckily I knew of a local starter/alternator place near me in Blackburn and £60 and 2 hours later my alternator was fully refurbished, running and looking like new. Even the plastic looked brand new. Something to consider. They won't do one with a cracked housing though. And it would have been £30-£35 to repair if it was just a problem. Don't know if they could sort yours via postage if it is at fault. Hope this helps. Ellison Auto Electrics Forrest St, Blackburn BB1 3BB 01254 265988 https://goo.gl/maps/QjqF4gqHeY22

Hi, as Darlo said check for excessive movement of turbo shaft....it could be something simple like a hose poped off....at 2000rpm you should measure 14 volts +/- 0,4 volts on a good condition alternator!

As said above you might just have a popped hose , it would seriously underpower the car .
And the turbo is pretty easy to change out too I wouldn’t Bin a Volvo with that long an mot on account of a dead turbo . |

Hello there , a "shushing & rattling noise " from a turbo engine could be the wastegate opening & closing rapidly , it may well be the intercooler has cracked and as boost pressure builds , the crack opens allowing air to escape & the edges to vibrate . This again will produce a shush & rattle .
With the engine warm / hot pour soapy water over the intercooler and have the engine running at 2000 - 2500 rpm , any boost leaks will appear very quickly as soapy foam ( a bit like checking bike tyre for a puncture )

Yes. Whose those values, the battery is not being charged by the alternator.

It will be with the coolant and aircon, three radiators that look more or less the same at the front of the engine bay, follow the big boost hoses to get the correct one.
