What might cause fuel smell (sometimes) when re-starting?
I've only had my T4 for about 4 wks so don't know it's full history, but have only in the last few days noticed that when I restart it from warm there's a strong petrol smell for about 1-2 sec when starting.
It starts and then the smell goes away. Perhaps linked to this, the previous owner mentioned it used to cut out sometimes when manoeuvring and I too have noticed that it will sometimes stall when parking as if it doesn't like restarting and staying at low revs, and the will then cut out whilst I'm swapping from fwd to reverse. I've checked OBDII and there are no codes (I know the reader works as it worked on both my previous X40's) In general it seems to run well, pull strongly etc so I think it's something low-rev related, perhaps the MAF or the fuel pressure regulator as that seems to be mentioned on here in quite a few posts? I've got a spare MAF that I'd purchased for my previous V40 which I could perhaps try as a test, but as that car was a 1.6 I wasn't sure whether that unit will work in the T4 or is there some differences between the two? I'd checked on here and there are quite a few posts referring to the Fuel Pressure Regulator, might that be the issue, bearing in mind there are no error codes showing? Alternatively, any suggestions as to what might be causing the issue? Thanks

My t4 did this, cleaning the idle control valve seemed to help, still did it very occasionally but nowhere near as often as before

Have a look at the carbon canister, as it is hidden away under the front drivers side wing behind the bumper, it is often forgotten about, but it can cause the problems that you have. Check it for damage, cracked casing, leaking pipes, faulty valves, etc.
