I changed from an XC90 to an XC60 and my children (16, 14 and 8) find the space better for them. Particularly the outer two. The seat has a better shape and provides more support.
The difference is in the boot where there is a massive difference. I miss the XC90 boot for holidays but prefer the XC60 size for day to day driving. You must use both back to back to really know for you and yours. |

Well, but you have to see that in each car it is measured differently. In XC90 it is measured from the middle point of the seat (between back and knees) to somewhere below the front seat. In XC60 it starts at the back of the seat (where your back is) to the edge of the front seat. Those two numbers are just not comparable and I do not understand why they do it like this.
And since you can move the 2nd row, is this measure taken at its maximum? XC90 vs. XC60 And now when you compare it with XC40, the official measure says that the legroom is only 1 inch less than in XC90 (917mm). Can you believe that? Go and sit in both those cars, just to compare if you can feel that 1 inch difference XC40

I haven't spent any journeys in the rear of my XC60 as yet nor have I filled it with passengers very often but on one occasion when I did have 5 on board the rear passengers did comment on the amount of space (positively). None of them were particularly small either.
But obviously as others have said it will really come down to your own situation - there's no denying its a smaller car with less space overall, its just a question as to whether the reduction in space is something that works with your life. I wouldn't worry too much about it feeling a lot less premium than an XC90 - I've driven both and wouldn't have said there was much to choose between the two of them.

Interesting comments, thanks everyone. The main reason for considering the switch is financially driven. I wouldn't give up the XC90 unless I had to, but may be forced to if I can't get the monthly payments down.
I might end up making the balloon payment on my current car, getting an extended warranty and stick it on a loan. Would work out lower monthly cost than what I am paying now, the difference I could use to stick in the bank and use if the car needs anything spending on it.

I presume the biggest issue that is driving this is residuals? In the year since I ordered mine the 49 month GFV has fallen by nearly £5k which is a huge amount and, of course, needs to be made up by higher monthly payments or a larger deposit.
Having looked at four year old trade values it seems that mine has no likely equity built in and might be a tad negative if used prices stay where they are. The flipside is that new business is written with large equity allowances. In a long way I am saying that you will pay more per month but you will see the benefit in a larger deposit built in for next time whereas I will have nothing in mine. With three kids I would want the largest boot I could find.

We considered both and test drove both. Currently have 14,16 and 17 year old.
It was no contest really. Boot space for day to day sports, school and shopping was so much better in the XC90. But the real issue was the way the central tunnel affected the middle persons comfort. The kids found it far more comfortable in the middle seat of the XC90 and the middle seat person didn't annoy the outer seat people. The XC90 middle row seats recline a little which was also appreciated. Now I don't let the kids choose the cars we buy but the interior space difference with three teenage children was a significant factor in the decision to go for the XC90.

I sent you a private message before reading the whole thread.
I see you've now sorted a new vehicle for yourself so my message isn't really relevant. Apologies. |

I’ve gone from a T6 XC90 to a T8 XC60 and found the following:
Boot space is a bit restricted for my two greyhounds but adequate. It’s nice running on electricity as I do mainly short trips. As it’s a bit smaller it’s easier getting through small spaces and parking. I have gone for the head-up display and I love it. Trim is a bit cheaper in places but not a problem. The T8 has brilliant acceleration in power mode. I didn’t go for Polestar as I had it on the XC90 and I think it’s a bit of a rip-off. You get lots of people giving subjective opinions of it but I have never seen before and after timings. |
