Hi there,
I have always been car mad and have always opted for the manual box as it is more of a drivers car in my opinion. I have not long got rid of a C70 T5 with the manual box and replaced it with a V70R auto. At first i missed the manual box, but after a couple of months driving the auto im well and truly converted. It is so relaxing and stress free. I love it

Thumbs down Manual Vs Auto

Hmmmm... Tricky one. I have a 740SE (2.0i) manual estate & a 940GLE 2.3LPT auto estate.

The manual just feels zippier despite having somewhat less power. Is it real or is it just that the auto climbs gracefully to high speeds and I don't notice that I've nearly got nobbled by Mr.Gatso.

On the M'ways, at say, 60mph in fifth, I feel a fair bit of pull to overtake without having to drop a cog. Not so sure that it feels the same in the auto even though it overtakes effortlessly.

Around town the auto wins in the fatigue department and is also more economical. On a run the 2.0 manual is actually quite economical. It cost 53 quid from London to West Wales & return last week in all that sh*t weather at silly speed for a fair bit of the way there & back. In some ways I prefer the manual on a run. When I turn off to the services etc., there's some 'work' to do which relieves the boredom. With the auto it's just brake & accelerate.

On balance..... Auto round town, manual on a run. On the other hand...

I dunno! Love 'em both.

Voted for manual, but difficult question. It really depends on what kind of driving you do....for queues, definitely auto, also cruise control can keep you from speeding too much without noticing on long journeys, set the speed you can afford to pay and just steer!! Think I'm a bit of a child tho' coz I think its fun changing gears, lol.
Feel much safer with a manual on icy roads, as an auto changing gear in a corner can be tricky, depending on how smoothly it changes.

Default Manual for me.

Hi,

I just bougth a 940 manual, 3 years ago i had a manual Golf 1400 and loved it (had only 4 gears so ).
I need some time to get used to the old idea but i guess for the short trips (about 5 Km a day), i will survive.
I do love to be in control with the manual, but it does have it's drowbacks in traffic jams.

I dont mind whether it's auto or manual, although it's an auto I have just now (T5), my only real concern with auto's goes back to when I had my first BM 525, and I the box started "slipping", and I got the dreaded "tran's prog" on the dash, ever since then Iv'e very wary auto's.

I aggree with V70driver aswell....when I say's about the auto enthusiasts that say when in their auto and it's on cruise it's great. Iv'e also had auto's and manual's with cruise, and it make's no diffirence at all on motorway's. Whether it's auto or manual when on cruise, and like him (V70driver) I dont understand why they say this either!.

Default Depends on size IMO

for my big V90, the auto is the perfect mate.. stately cruising mostly, but then click the Sport button for tearing around. Also I live in a city, so it has to be auto.

On a smaller car I prefer a manual.

I once had a Mkiv Golf Auto. YUK!

Cheers,
Paul.

Cool Manual everytime!

I drive the V70 police spec everyday at work, i would be lost without the control the manual gives. I also have an s40. Manual wins for me everytime!

Smile Auto for me

I have a game left leg, so an auto is much easier. Taking the 544 to shows on long trips is difficult.
