Default Heater fan doesnt blow hard enough - any ideas ?

Heater was rubbish during v cold weather so set about trying to get it sorted. Started by having thermostat replaced - that made it a bit warmer and the running temp of engine higher but didnt affect fan... So - thought it could be pollen filter blocked, turns out after much digging around and time wasting my '99 v40 1.6XS it seems hasnt got a pollen filter !
So can anyone suggest a relatively inexpensive plan of attack now ?

Thanks v much in advance.

I don't know what's normal but my fan is not exactly wonderful either at demisting the windscreen. Closing the vents that face you on the dash definitely improves delivery to the windscreen though.

Hi Landyman

I just went on to this link and went straight through:

Make sure that you are signed in, or it doesn't work.

That is what happened to me, this afternoon!

See link on 1st page but bear in in mind it may also be the potentiometer behind the control knob on the dash in which case some electrical cleaning fluid may revive it as dirty contacts can cause the random fan speed problem.
I replaced the transistor under the glove box and this had no effect on the heater fan blowing random speeds. I cleaned the potentiometer and now have all fan speeds.
