Came back 6 weeks later. I now have a theory:
My CEL came on right after I changed my plugs. I recently remembered that when I changed the plugs some of that brittle black corrugated tubing fell into the spark plug hole while the spark plug was out. I wonder if that stuff (when melted) could block up the oil passages in the vvt. I'm thinking that it could...this could explain why a relatively new vvt could gum up. What do you guys think?

Man I think I need a translation device for that one! Are you saying my theory does not hold water?

The plastic fell into the sparkplug hole so would be in the combustion chamber and nuked the first time that cylinder fired. It would either be welded to the top of the piston or more likely carbonised and expelled out of the exhaust. Impossible to contaminate the VVT via the oil supply.

Right - got it. Thank you. That theory is no good.

Has anyone heard of owners replacing the camshaft sensor (part #9202117) to successfully address this kind of issue? My understanding is that each time the car starts the ECM verifies that the VVT comes out of the "lock" position...would that test not be accomplished by the cam shaft sensor?
I've just learned that I will not pass the Ontario Emissions test if my CEL is on so I now have 12 months to address this...I really don't want to go back in and replace the VVT only to find that I have not solved my issue...what a nuisance as the car continues to run like a dream.
