Extended warranty?
My initial 3 year warranty comes to an end next week. I've been offered the extended warranty - 1 year/60k for £345. I'm in two minds. I have an s60 SE Lux. 27k on the clock. The car has been great with no issues of note. I could do without spending that much, but on the other hand... Any thoughts?

The devil is in the detail.
Price wise seems very competitive, Mrs Ls' Toyota £545 one year extended. My Volvo warranty expired next March, I think a similar quote to your warranty extension could tempt me. Check the small print to ensure your offer covers your needs is all I could suggest. |

I agree, the price seems fairly reasonable. I too will be interested at that price.
Just out of interest, did they also quote for extra 2 or extra 3 years of warranty, giving either 4, 5 or 6 years in total?

Some prefer Warranty Direct, but the list of inclusions and exclusions compared to Volvo is slightly different. Others will comment I'm sure.

I had a four year extended warranty from beginning of year 2 of MY11 XC60, which cost £54 a months. This included the service plan so I have never paid directly for a service in five years. In retrospect, I had no claims except for intermittent faults with infotainment for which I received free updates.
A 1 year "Extensive Component" cover from Volvo which is only available as a continuation from a Volvo warranty for qualifying mileage and age, was quoted to me at £540 which was little different from Warranty Direct - these did not include servicing. I have had two claims, one for trailing arm bushes, in this sixth year so I reckon I'm quids-in with this warranty. The exclusions with the Volvo warranty were fairly clear. WarrantyDirect seemed to omit the infotainment system in their standard quote but they would have covered it for a little extra. Personally I am considering going with a Volvo warranty again. EDIT: My warranty expires at end of June and I can't find the product I currently have on the Volvo web site any more. Perhaps I won't be able to extend my cover with them after all!

Another consideration when comparing the warranties is the requirement for you to pay an excess. The Volvo extended warranty I had and the "Extensive Component" one I currently have, do not demand an excess. I note that if I take out an Extra Cover Warranty with Warranty Direct, it requires an excess of £50 and the infotainment system is not covered. However, if Volvo are no longer offering to extend my warranty, WD might be the only option.

For £1/day I'd sleep better at night knowing there wasn't something massively expensive around the corner...

hindsight is a wonderful thing....
I didn't take extended warranty at 3 years old since the car had run very well, then at 4.5 years and 75k miles the gearbox failed (seems looking on hear not the most uncommon thing for a Greatronic). Looked at independent refurb of the gearbox and everyone wanted between £2800 and £3500. The dealer pushed Volvo UK and they agreed to contribute towards a new gearbox which ended up costing me £2300. Obviously I chose the replace option since that was in the end the cheapest! Lesson learned too late, it would have cost me about £1200 for 2 years warranty when I inquired.
