Default C70 2.0d or 2.4 d5

Hey,
Is the 2.0d c70 powershift really as bad as im hearing? Found my perfect car but it has this engine and im being put off!!
I would love a d5 geartronic but think insurance is foing to be to much. Is the power much different as the 2.4 must weigh more than the 2.0d. Advise asap woulf be good before I place deposit on a bad car.
Cheers
Phill

Hi,

I've had a C70 2.0D powershift and now have a C70 D5 Geartronic.

The powershift was a very nice smooth gearbox, the 2.0D is a bit underpowered for a heavy car but adequate (they often put out about 150bhp on a dyno so a decent cruiser). I could squeeze 50mpg on my commute.

The 2.0D engine has its issues but they are well documented on here. I had this engine in a V50 also, and it was excellent. Biggest issue for me is the powershift 'box.

Mine went wrong and would have needed serious work (£2K plus) to fix, so it got moved on! Lots of stories of powershift unreliablity compared to the geartronic. Don't think I'd take the risk again, especially when mileage gets high.

You can read my experiences here: - http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=217685

The D5 is a different beast. Loads of torque suits a heavy car, so it feels quicker than it is. Geartronic is a good reliable gearbox, not the latest technology, but more than good enough for a big cruiser. Slow off the line, but when moving it can keep up with hot hatches OK. 40mpg average is about all you will manage, and around town it will take a dive.
If the geartronic ever goes wrong, there are plenty of specialist who can fix at a reasonable cost, as it is used on many other cars. Just don't go the engine remapped as the geartronic cannot handle the extra torque. Most D5s will be 7 years old + now as they stopped fitting it to the C70 in about 2010.

The D3 and D4 engines are very good, so maybe worth checking out.

In summary, the D3, D4 or D5 would be my choice if you want auto. 2.0D in a manual is OK, but I'd advise driving one to see if it has enough power.
Powershift too risky.

Enjoy your new car whatever you choose. Great value convertibles!!

PS move the thread to the general section for more feedback.

Thanks for your opiniins mate.. the powershift im looking at is 50,000 miles and I plan on keeping for 5 years should have aboit 110,000 miles by that point. I would like a d5 but finding one with all the things like power folds, bluetooth is an issue at the moment. Not fussed about sat nav I guess. All the d5 engine ones have around 70-80,000 miles. Is this not a bit high?
How do I move a thread to general?
Cheers

I think you have to get a moderator to move it.

My powershift failed at 70K. Some seem to last forever and some fail quickly. When I bought mine it was fine and 10K later it was on its way out. Cant say I'd trust an old powershift to be reliable, but might be worth reading a few threads on this forum. I'm sure there are many high mileage powershift owners out there. Make sure you get a good warranty for piece of mind!

As I remember my MY10 model (SE LUX) had powerfolds & bluetooth but no sat nav or high end audio. The sat nav fitted to C70s is the last generation style. It looks a bit like space invaders compared to a modern system! Not worth paying extra for really as plenty of other options.

Nicest option is a bluepower unit if you are feeling flush (£520). This will give you modern touchscreen satnav, radio, DVD/CD player, USB/SD media connection, bluetooth etc. and is an integrated fit into the dash and works with the steering wheel buttons. Nice piece of kit! Try here: -
https://www.bluepower.se/en/product/...dunit-arm.html

This will give you more choice of cars, as you don't have to get hung up on options fitted.

70-80K on a D5 is not much, but cambelt change is approaching (usually 96k or 10 years). That's about £400. Also dampers may need changing from about 90K. A £4-500 job at an independent garage.
I bought mine with 100K on and it drives beautifully but I had to get the above work done. Need to factor that into the purchase price. You see plenty of high mileage D5s about so not a big concern.

Thanks mate.. maybe I should avoid the powershift then its a shame as its local and has everything I wanted and full main dealer history. But i would be worried abiut the box now. Do the standard SE sound systems soumd pretty good?
I think you have the newer shape to what im looking at. Im looking at the 07-09 region. Quite surprised about shocks needing doing! My old mg has 118000 miles on them and still going ok

All the 2nd gen. C70's have a metal roof, so everything 06 plate on is basically the same. Mine is a 57 plate so one of the earlier models.

Dampers will depend on how it's been driven, but mine has been much better after the change. It's a 1700kg+ car, so dampers work very hard!

Standard Volvo radios are very good quality for a standard fit.

If you get a good warranty then the PowerShift would be no risk if it's the car you want.

Lots of warranty comparison sites about so you should get cover for £200/year. Worth it for the peace of mind.

Good luck with the new car.

Sounds a nice C70.

Black with the red leather is very cool. Xenons are a bonus, as the standard halogen headlight are no better than a couple of torches taped to the front of the car!

I've got the light oak. Its a love/hate thing. I love it!

Agree. You need to study the warranty closely to see what isn't covered.

Yeah ive kind of been looking at the light oak and its growing on me now! I guess looks a bit different to the usual silver!
Was trying to check the MOT history but for some reason the DVLA site cant find the car. It does have a personal plate on it though. Going to find out which Volvo dealer serviced it later and get some info about the car I think.
