Default rear brakes

Hi all - Im new here and have already benefitted from JSeamans article on the gear linkage - just completed installation and now I can get reverse again! so thanks!

Just changed the rear discs because they were in such a bad state along with new pads.
The calipers are rusty but the seals are good and work fine, the C shaped iron bracket to which the calipers are bolted seem to have a problem on the drivers side rear though.
When I removed this bracket I noticed that the lower sprung telescopic lug that is used to attach one of the bolts from the caliper has seized.
It looks like it has been pushed in too far and is stuck which I geuss is pretty much essential for correct brake function.
Is there an easy way to retract and restore the function of this gatored sprung nut or would it be easier to just get a replacement. I tried to free it on the bench in a vice with a bit of pulling but no success.
Also I have searched on line for the part but dont really know what it is called and so have no idea what the cost might be for a replacement.
If anyone has any ideas id be greateful.
Thanks

Hey up,

I think you are talking about the slide pins.

These are top and bottom in the c shaped bracket that holds the pads.

They should move freely in and out of the c shaped bracket.

They are supposed to be heavily greased with each pad or disc change.

If you can't free them up, it will be 2nd hand scrap yard or eBay time.

I have a pair of rear calipers for a phase 1.5 car, I don't know if they fit.

Many Thanks,

Daniel

Hi Daniel - thanks for the quick reply,

yes thats the desription I was looking for - "slide pins" and definately one pin has seized. I dont know what phase my s40 is, on an S plate though - If anyone knows please let me know for future reference please. I will have another go at freeing it up - it is compressed right in! failing that I will visit the scrappy.

regarding the greasing of the c bracket pins - the gator covering the pins looks to be in the way and is melt crimped at the edges so from what i can see would be pretty difficult to grease without breaking the gator - maybe that might be the difference and mine might be phase 1 rather than phase 1.5

If anyone has any idea of the name of the C bracket Item (probably caliper C bracket come to think of it ) and approximate cost for new or refurbished that would be useful to know too.

Thanks for your time

Paul

hi again,

I took the bracket off again and tried to free it but it wouldnt budge so U removed the rubber gator and could see the pins were rusted solid.
Quick trip to the local scrappy and £10 later all working fine now and well greased pins on both sides.
thanks for your advise Re: the pins .
