Red face Engine Noise from belt pulley area.

A metalic grating sound that increases with engine revs has suddenly started up on my V40. Funny thing is, when I switch on the aircon it disappears!! Have had a good 'look' but can't see anything out of the ordinary. Nothing chafing or rubbing, no loose belts etc. Anyone any ideas?? Driving me blind!

Hi there,

Which engine is it?

When I had this problem, it was the alternator pulley.

They have a clutch in that ceases.

Does the aircon pulleys have the same? If so, if turning the aircon on stops it, I'd suspect that.

Many Thanks,

Daniel.

Cheers Daniel, it's the 1.9 diesel. Does it cost much?

I had the same thing around Christmas, it disappeared then came back a couple weeks ago The auxiliary/alternator belt tensioner seized shortly after which also murdered my battery.

I couldn't find a new tensioner anywhere here so I put a used one in out of 50k mileage car 40€, New Belt 20€ and new battery 70€.

Hey up,

I've got a fully working tensioner from that engine you are welcome to if it turns out to be that seized.

I paid £30 for the alternator pulley from GSF.

Your issue is getting the old one off. You'll need the right tools.

There's a thread about me changing it on here somewhere.

It's almost cheaper to get a refurbished alternator in exchange for yours and change the whole unit.

Or, for not much more you can get a new alternator as they normally come with pulley attached.

Basically, remove the aux belt and there's a test you can do by spinning the alternator pulley by hand, stopping it and seeing if the alternator carries on to a stop or just stops with you stopping the pulley.

I'd have a dig locally for an alternator refurbishing place. There's one here in Worcester for example.

Cheers,

Daniel.
