Advice needed...what to look for...
Hi all, I'm returning to the Volvo fold after my unfortunate accident with my V70 back in Sept 2010 which resulted in my V70 being written off (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=98295)...
...Anyway...I'm now looking for a good 2001 - 2002 year V40, 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engines...What am I to look out for? I had a LOT of trouble when I first bought my V70 and had to spend in excess of over £1000 to get it to standard so I'd rather avoid that this time! You posts are much appreciated people...would really help as I've only got until next Friday to find a car...Thanks! - Harry.

A comprehensive service history and dependant on mileage make sure the timing belt has been done.

I take it there is no problematic system such as the ETM on V40/S40...?

Go for a facelift model (03-04 I think), looks much smarter. See this thread
I looked around quite a bit, ended up paying a bit more to get an 03 model as there were quite a few improvements. Ended up getting an 2003 V40 Sport facelift, FSH with 56k on the clock, 12months MOT and pretty much mint apart from it needed 4 new tyres, for £3990 (that was with a years warranty too which covers just about everything that isn't wear+tear).

If your looking at a 1.8, try to get a volvo engine and not the 1.8i mitsubushi GDI engine as it does have coking issues.

Hi, mine is a T4 2001 had it two years, great car, prior to that I had a 1.8 which I sold with 212,000 on the clock. In the past two years I have replaced, timing belt, auxiliary belt and tensioner, strut mounts, drop links, and discs and pads all round. Look to see if these have been done, and just the usual general has it been looked after.

Definitely as said, the cambelt is top of the list. Think it's about 80k for a change....
Then check the emmisions of the model you are looking at as it has a big effect on the tax bracket. The 03 plate models started to have roof bars which is useful, and I think that was when they started to get the twin headlights instead of a single one if looks are important. The only main problem with the v40's was that the anti rollbar bush suspension link (basically a rubber bush) can play up - you will feel a MASSIVE clonk if you go over a bump...... hope that helps a bit more? |
