Default Material of the brake pipe?

Hi,

While replacing the brake hose I managed to breake the plastic coating on the brake pipe.

I thought that the pipes where made of copper, but the color of the pipe tells me diffrent.

What material does volvo use for the brake pipes? Steel? I’m afraid of rust...

The car is a v70, 2010

Have you tried putting a magnet on it and seeing if it is steel? If it's not copper, which is subject to metal fatigue, it may well be cupro-nickel which is the best material for brake pipes and is a silver colour.

Just tried with magnet, and it attached to the brake pipe, so it’s steel i guess!

Not necessarily. Cunifer brake piping can be magnetic depending upon the level of nickel in it. It has about 2% iron and 10 to 20% nickel but some alloys have great nickel content and that when combined with the iron content allows them to be attracted by a magnet. Cu ni fer is Cu (copper) + ni (nickel) + fer (Iron). Your piping may still be Cunifer but it is more expensive than steel so I suppose it will depend on how Volvo viewed their quality issues. Sorry to mislead with the magnetic test but I didn't realise that some Cunifer alloys used for brake lines had higher nickel content.
