Thanks bud but I’ve been a Radio 4 buff for 40+ years.😀

I cannot abide Bruce and his smarmy, insipid voice. Glad he is gone, alongside the cringe inducing Steve Wright. I gave up listening to most music radio many years ago and now prefer Radio 4, TalkSport or LBC at a push. All these 'dj's' people get misty eyed over ever did was spoilt the space between decent tunes, and even they were scarce on Radio 2!

There is a difference between a personality and a DJ.

Steve Wright was really a personality for whom music was just something to talk over, sing over, and to link together sections of "This Is Me". It used to annoy the hell out of me but sometimes it could be fun, especially in the earlier days some forty years ago.

Ken Bruce is also a personality, but he takes music seriously, and his show is therefore far more music-orientated than Steve Wright's was. Pop Master, Tracks Of My Years, and The Music Room all bear this out. He's also worked out how to be humorous on the BBC without attracting any declarations of personal offence. A true feat.

As for Tony Blackburn, he's a clear music man and DJ. His approach is simply to link music with requests, dedications, and jokes. Such is his enthusiasm for Motown that he used to be asked to write the sleeve notes for Motown Chartbuster albums. He also knows how to give energy, enthusiasm, and humour to listeners, even at 80. For my wife and I, his Friday evening Golden Hour was an essential part of the evening, following on from Simon Mayo's All-Request Friday on GHR. Then the BBC decided that they knew better and moved the Golden Hour to Sunday. Depressing, really.

Have to admit to being a little amused by folks who are going to abandon R2 because Steve Wright (et al) are no longer there, Steve Wright was one of the reasons I stopped listening to R1, as I didn't listen to much radio at the weekends he didn't affect me on R2. Chris Evans' breakfast show was similar although I found the 'crew' tended to ameliorate his prattling, and by comparison to some of the bat-crap crazies they had on the early breakfast show he was almost normal.

Steve Wright in the early days was great but he was also the BBC clone of Howard Stern watered down, I still enjoy his show though as as Soto mentions the music is a vehicle for a covert chat show in reality.

However nobody will ever trump Whispering Bob, he really is the pure version of a DJ.

Default Well you couldn’t make this up!!

Seems perhaps BBC have realised their error, but won’t admit it.

Can’t see all the GHR listeners flocking back somehow..

Cheers
Steve

Late to this party, but then I'd be late to any party whose invitation list includes the terminally dull Bruce, Mayo et al... 😂
