Question front suspension, 2001 s40 1.8

my s40 has developed a knocking sound from under the offside front, when traveling over rough road surfaces, or pot-holes, someone told me this is probably the anti-roll bar link rods. is this a common fault? , the clutch will need replacing before too long, is this likely to be a re-mortgage job? finally, i live close to a private volvo specialist in leeds (p & r cars ) does anyone have any feedback on this garage ?
thanks jerry.

I've just picked up my car (also an S40 1.8) from P & R, having taken it in for various wear and tear items, and can highly recommend them - very knowledgeable and insisted on checking and diagnosing first, rather than blindly replacing parts. The chap also went through the invoice item by item and made recommendations without the hard sell.

Idle observation: of the half dozen or so cars in their workshop (all Volvos), at least half of them were over ten years old and none looked even remotely bangerish. Now that must say something about Volvo engineering...
