gas pedal stiff!!!
got a s40 R plate and only had it a week its 144000 on it has full service history and all reciepts got a question.... gas pedal is hard is this normal in volvos???
wen m driving it feels like the pedal is right down and touching the floor and i think may be the pedal has not enuf room under it.. cheked under pedal but all looks ok... bak to question pedal should be hard or not?? if not wat can i do to loosen it?? rest of pedals are soft. |

The "gas pedal" on my S40 is very stiff but works okay. I think the spring at the other end is responsible but can't be bothered to investigate further.....

I would say its definitely worthwhile taking the throttle body off and giving it a good clean with some carb cleaner or something as they're known to crud up with mileage and that could possibly affect the way the throttle mechanism or plate operate.

A number of things to look at here.
Firstly, has the pedal really not got much movement before it hits the floor? Secondly, if you operate the throttle from under the bonnet does it move freely? Does the cable appear to be sticking? If there is not much pedal travel to the floor I've an idea what it may be.

cable
it could be the throttle cable stretched or not fitted right see if there is a lot of slack at the engine end when the pedal is lifted up.
If it has, either a replacement or a spacer on the cable outer,as long and there is a little bit of slack in and the quadrant it returning to the stop it will be ok. A bit of oil on either end of the cable wouldnt hurt as well |

When I had a look under the dash the bracket on which the pedal and cruise motor (if fitted) is mounted had been bent towards the floor, thus moving the throttle pedal in that direction too. The only way I could fix it was by slotting an extension bar behind the bracket and forcing it back the other way. I put a post on here about it as I thought it may be a design fault but no-one else had had any trouble, until now. Let us know if that's causing it, as we could find no reason at all for ours to be deformed.
