Also lights are flickering & fuel gauge seems inop i believe the fli kering is the alternator but could this be causing the misfire - please help someone as im on a very tight budget & have to get this sorted thank you all in advance for any advice or help you may be able to provide

440===
Well sounds like the carb is freezing.... but we know its not that... Sounds fuel to me, wonder if thd filter needs changing? Also, have you given it a service, may be worth looking at the distributor cap? Just thinking of simple ideas that it could be... I had a 440 GLE years ago and did lots and lots of miles in it, it was a fantastic car... Best of luck, others on here will definitely be able to give you far more advice though... all the best... enjoy

Hi and welcome.
To help us to help you we need to know what engine is in your 440, as well as year etc. To start with though, I'd check simple things like all earth straps to the engine/battery as they are a known weakness. Also all connectios at the alternator, starter and battery. If you have the fuel guage (fuel/temp needles) as opposed to the info centre (digital readout) they can be unbelievably slow to react. I could drive 10 miles in one of mine before the needle moved to where it should be! The low fuel light is thankfully much more on the ball! Your problem does definitely sound electrical to me though, so hopefully will be an easy fix. Steve

So...
According to the "Doing it sideways" you wont be needing a hammer to fix this one...

Thanks so much for the replies its a 1.8 injection went out earlier & it was farting about as above, pulled over for a bit & pulled away after & it kept stalling, i then realised that if i put foot to the floor it absolutely took off ( like it should i assume ) 2 miles later its back to having to gently feather the throttle to make it accelerate, the only thing i had done whilst stopped was to fiddle sith the wires under the rear seat, but tried fiddling since & has made no difference - so it either goes like it should with more than half throttle but dead with less than half & it stalls or you have to feather the throttle to even make it accelerate & it dies if yo give more throttle but ticks over fine - my mechanical knowledge tells me idle control sensor or something
Also i can hear the pump buzzing away at the back with ignition on first click Then theres the flicker of every bulb on the car which you can hear is effecting the fuel pump I hope i havent bought a money pit guys, thought it would be a suitable cheap run around but when it ran right earlier it absolutely took off and with 61 k o the clock it should be good for a while if i can sort these few probs out My dad always swore by volvo, always had them & i think i could grow to love this car Honestly appreciate any advice Thanks again Stu Ps im used to working on land rovers & such so electrickery is not my thing ( which sensors etc can you get at to clean etc ) ? Please let it b a easy fix its obviously nothing major as it went like stink for a wee while Last edited by stuc24; Dec 29th, 2013 at 02:15. Reason: mistake |

Thanks guys but im sure i know what it is - if i disconnect the alternator wires it runs fine - its giving 15.3 - over 16 volts & fluctuating so that explains the lights flickering, i guess the ecu etc is struggling to work with the fluctuating voltage - also cleaned up the flywheel sensor - ordered new alternator so fingers crossed thanks for your help guys

Aye, you certainly seem to have found the problem.
15-16v is way too high, so the regulator must be well and truely fubarred!! I just hope your ECU has survived unscathed, if not I have a late Siemens ECU from a late B18u (1.8 single point injection) that would probably do the trick. Steve
