Heater Motor
I have a 240 GL Estate which has a non working Heater Fan / Motor. I have mentioned this before , but i have just come back online after a time out , for an upgrade. I would really appreciate some advice on how to replace this motor. Also would i need to replace the Matrix? Obtaining a motor is a problem at the moment . Has anyone done this job , or knows of anyone who has who can help.
I live in Grimsby N.E Lincs and can be contacted by e mail. THANKS. |

First check fuses and earth contacts. I thought I had a failed motor turned out to be corroded or loose fuse connection. It's worth trying a temporary supply
(both negative and positive) to the motor. It is time consuming - if you do a search you will find previous posts on how to do it. I am currently scrapping a 240 with working heater - unfortunately I'm on Anglesey. There's usually someone breaking a 240 on ebay - you might find someone nearer. Mike

It's a long job but not too hard. No need to replace the matrix unless you want to. You have to remove the lower dash frame that holds all those controls and the ash tray etc. The heater box can then be rotated out, but only just, it is tight, once you have disconnected everything from it. Just work carefully and methodically with a system that means you can replace all the right screws in the right holes when you put it back again which may quite possibly be on another day. As always taking lots of photos as it comes apart will help with the reassembly.
Get the best motor you can for the replacement, it would be heart breaking to do all that work and then have the 'new' motor fail shortly afterwards. |

I've literally just finished this and having a celebratory cup of tea. I got my fan for £20 from Ebay. Works a treat. I bench tested it first, then again after installing in the heater housing to test if anything was rubbing. The matrix was fine, but covered in leaves.
I followed Richard Clarks instructions that I found here somewhere. It really does take 6-8 hours, but after suffering the cold and misted windows for months, it's got to be worth doing. |

Reassuring, as my own 1990 heater fan has just begun 'squarking' when it's really cold. I'm sure there will be a grille badge for this eventually 'new heater fan and maitrix fitted' like the high mileage badges!

Trevor,
I bought a 240 recently with a non-working heater. I heard a lot of bad things about replacing the motor, i.e. dash out etc. I ended up getting one of my local Volvo specialist to do the job (Jump Leads Nr Blackpool). The whole job including the motor was £120. Hardly worth wasting a day and srcraping your knuckles!! Regards, Dave |
