clonking into gear....
Anyone any idea as to the following...
Car is a 2014/64 reg XC70 D5 geartronic with less than 5,000 miles bought new by me in December. The gearbox has recently started to be a bit noisey, and occasionally a rough change from 1 to 2 and 2 to 1. Also after a drive of about 15 mins going from N to D is accompanied by a loud 'bang' or 'clonk' and the car lerches forward as the gear is engaged. It also does that from N or P to R. Does it about 40% of the time and is more noticable when warm. My previsous 2012 XC70 geartonic didnt do this at all so i'm guessing that its an issue but what? The car is booked into dealers for examination but wanted to be armed with some info to counter 'they all do that, sir'. Any advice? |

Gareth,
They certainly don't all do that and I would say there is definitely a problem with the gear change, whether that is mechanical or can be sorted out through reprogramming the computer I don't know. I do know that these cars have an "adaptive" gear change and after several miles it "learns" how you drive the car and starts to change the gears at the optimal time according to your driving style. Yours sounds like it is so far off the mark there is defo a problem as all changes from N to D or R or whatever should be smooth and barely perceptible. I would suggest it could be an engine mounting but, as the car is new, it shouldn't be. Take the Service Manager or Technician out for a drive in the car and show him the problem don't just leave the car or they might just drive it round the forecourt and say "it isn't too bad and will settle down" or as you said 'they all do that, sir'.

Thats what i thought, my 12 plate was so much smoother.
Im the only driver so would have thought the gearbox brain would have learnt my style by now. |

Mine does it time to time. Proper lurches and thuds going from n to d. My 'box software was updated a year ago, and had to be re-learnt. Was better but still does it time to time now. Unless it gets worse, I'll put up with it. MY12 D5 67k now. |

Well, normal service has resumed, it was apparently the gearbox software needing a 'reflash', although am at a loss as to why it should 'forget' its parameters after such a short period. Will be keeping a very close eye on it now.

An old thread now, but an update of sorts.
Well the gearbox still bangs into D or R from N, but only after a fiarly long drive. ( not towing etc) Marshalls have tried to reset etc on 4 diiferent occasions now. Each time its a little better for a few weeks then 'bang' all over again. Car is due service soon and warranty expires in November. Im getting a bit fed up with this, as you can bet if I take it there in December they will say it needs a new gearbox for stupid money..... next step advise anyone? |

Hand it in to them now and get a loan car, tell them to fit a new gearbox or keep it until it is fully repaired.

Well theyve had the car for 3 days and agree the gearbox is not operating as it should.... the senior tech has sent a report to volvo UK. He has said that they have seen this a lot with the model of 'box and 99.9% of the time a new gearbox is needed.
He also said when pushed a bit was that would be the likely outcome for my car considering theyve had 4 attempts to cure it since I bought it new in Dec 2014... glad its still covered by the warranty. ( at least I hope so, i'm certainly not paying a penny towards it). |

I have experienced the problem you describe when moving from R or D to N and back, but on a 30 year-old Mercedes. It was due to the failure of the plastic bushings in the gearbox linkage. The parts were very cheap (12 pounds) but it took 6 hours' labour to strip down the gearbox from underneath the car and replace them. I wouldn't expect a failure like this on so new a car.
