When will automotive engineers stop using plastics for critical components! 9 times out of 10 it's done to save them money at the expense of reliability. Sooner or later most plastic deteriorates and fails.

I blame FORD on this one , it took volvo 3 attempts to sort this one out over 4 years and many wrecked engines . Even now many non volvo service places do not realise the Aux belt MUST be replaced every 54000 miles on the 5 cylinder .

Yes all looks to be running true at the moment but i will get it changed over. Is it much of a job? I'm handy with the spanners but not done this on a P3 car.

It is a recall so free at a dealer .

Well just to finish this off, finally got round to sorting it. I took clans advice and contacted 2 dealers both of which claimed there was no recall on my car and it was all up to date despite the car clearly having the old tensioner. The one with The round exposed coil spring. The new one has a thicker square type spring fitted inside the tensioner.

So I ordered the new up to date tensioner and both belts and fitted them this morning. The stretch belt is a proper sod to change without the correct tool!!

I do still however have a whining sound. I checked all the aux pulleys and they all felt ok with no play or noise when I spun them. It has had a cambelt fitted already and is an INA kit. I hear the AC compressor could be the cause?

The tone will alter when you turn the AC on or off if it is the compressor...

Yeah i have just been to check that and it doesn't I'm thinking it's the alternator. The pulley seemed ok it must be the bearings inside. My s60 and v70 p2 cars alternators were both original at nearly 150k miles.....

Yes , They don't use Bosch now do they ..

No reason why you cant take it apart and replace the £15 bearing ...
