Thanks for the info Ian, I didn't think that the fridge would do much when on the car other than maintain the existing temperature.
From the installation guide the trailer module provides power for both the fridge and the battery. There is a 40 amp fuse fitted which should be plenty for both. I always start the fridge on mains electric for a day before we go so that it is nice and cold.

That Trailer Socket and/or Trailer Module.
We haven't got our hitch fitted yet. Daughter has arranged for a local independent, who has been recommended by a seasoned CC member we know, to come to the house to install said hitch etc. Daughter has spoken to the fitters but I haven't but I will bepresent when the work is being done. Daughter has given me strict instructions not to bend the fitter's ear too much.
Are any of you guys who already have hitches fitted able to say where the "trailer plug" is situated and is it actually the "trailer module" or is that fitted as part of the hitch electrics and plugged into the "trailer plug"? |

On my V70, 2015, the module is behind the trim on the passenger side in the boot side wall. On the volvo site there are fitting instructions with images for all models. I then negotiated the software update as part of my next service.

Thanks for the info Billggski.
Our XC70 was first regd. April 2011 so not sure whether it has 2011 spec or 2010, or whether it makes any difference regarding the trailer plug. The owner's manual states that there is a fuse box behind the nearside trim panel in the cargo area. Fuse 11 (40amp) is designated for the "trailer socket 1" but noted as an optional accessory. I've had a look in the cargo area and there is a fuse box in there. I wonder if when trailer wiring is fitted it is simply tapped from that fuseway. |

There's also another fuse in there.
Fuse 4 (15 amp) entitled "Trailer socket 2". I'd missed that.

When I had my Volvo tow bar fitted to my 2011 XC90 I asked the dealer to wire all the pins in the DIN socket-they didn't. They threw away a fuse that comes in the pack because they thought I didn't need it. My caravan at the time (an Adria) took power from the car in a slightly unusual way and it didn't work without all the pins connected. The only other issue is that when I once connected my caravan (this time a Bailey) to the car when the caravan battery was flat, it attempted to draw too much power and blew the fuse.
