I was slightly puzzled at the geography in that you were closer than the guys in Bedford, but hey-ho

OP reckoned so - you are correct in all matters Graham, as am I (at least outside our own houses...)

Yes, they didn't seem keen on the idea unless i'd been towing. I haven't, but I'm thinking preventative maintenance and the box is getting a bit bumpy changing up and down sometimes.

Yes, not actually in Ely any more, Wyboston. Could ask Lakes Auto I guess as they're over the road, but wanted real world opinions from people

I'm not so good either, I just put it into Google Maps and decided it wasn't a million miles away and that good service is worth travelling for.

You could take a different tack and use these (more local to you) guys too:

Same gearbox, and a well-respected Indy in the Saab community.
Hi all,

Just to give an update, I made a half day trip to Horton cars early on a Saturday, just before I was due to drive up to Edinburgh for a week.
I'd phoned Graham earlier in the week, he knew exactly what I was describing and how to deal with it.

Took it in for a Gearbox oil change and drove it home, then subsequently fully loaded with passengers and luggage to Edinburgh and back so I'm nearly 1000 miles in to my testing.

What a difference, I'm so pleased!
It's by no means a perfect gearbox, but it is almost there, certainly not much worse than the new Volvo's I've driven as courtesy cars.
Down shifts are almost un-noticeable except between 1st and 2nd, but the new Volvo's do that too. The box changes up sooner, far smoother than before (almost no bumping) and is more positive which is reassuring in corners and roundabouts. Before the change it felt like it hung about between gears too often and would change late.

To anyone questioning an oil change, do it sooner rather than later and take it to Horton Cars or someone who knows these boxes well.

Cheers for the suggestions and help, especially Graham and the guys at Horton Cars, I'd be lost without it.

Sean.
