Default Rear brake light 'upgrade'

I do like this (see video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfV3...em-uploademail

I've always wondered why the lights aren't made better use of, and here is a solution.

However, for what I assume is a resistor and 2 wires, it seems more like a 5 quid job from Maplin rather than a 25 euro plus nearly a tenner for postage.

Any electrical boffins out there know how this could be made? Let's be clear, I'm not looking to rip off the guy's 'module' or compete...it just seems expensive for a simple resistor 'hack'. If not, I guess I'd pay as I do like the overall look.

There seems to be some variation depending on the model-year in question.

The later models use the upper lights (on the tailgate) as side lights while the lower ones are used for brakes, as shown below. This is the opposite of my '08 model.

Also have you noticed that with the tailgate open, the brakes operate the lower set of lights, presumably as the normal ones on the tailgate are pointing upwards. It would make more sense for both sets to be used for brake lights to give maximum visibility.

I like the look of this!!!

Im no spark but why use a resistor? I thought he was basically adding in a pos to duplicate the bottom lights? There may be more to it though.
I might go to maplin in the morning and buy a few things and try this out.

I have just ordered the kit for this and hopefully will post some pics when fitted.

I Saw the video of this mod earlier in the week.
I like the idea but had concerns that the newly triggered "upper" tailights would be quite bright as technically they are brake lights.

I also had concerns that it would reduce the effectiveness of the brake lights?

Anyone put my mind at rest because i like the mod

.

I tried a good few resistors and set to something that has a noticeable effect when the brake is on. I will try and remember take a video/picture when I finish tonight to show the difference

Sounds like an easy but very effective upgrade, I look forward to seeing your picture of how you put it together. We have a Maplin just down the road so once I see your picture I'll be down there PDQ while my soldering iron warms up.

Thumbs up

Here is a picture and video......

+ YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

This is the resistor I bought http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/wirewound-...resistor-l100r

I done the same as that guy in the video in the first post but added in a 5amp fuse just incase it did draw any faults.

Hope ive made it a little easier for folk to do so..... in return post a picture

Just for me as someone who is electronicophobic, are you saying that you just connected the Maplin resistor across the two terminals shown in the Youtube video and that did the job that the Russian module does?
