Default Changing Water Pump

I have purchase and about to fit a new water pump to my 164. I'm lucky to have the Haynes manual for the car and it states that I need to remove the radiator to do the job.

Can anyone confirm if this is totally necessary?

Also does anyone know what torque setting is required when tightening up the bolts on the pump re the gasket?

Any other advice would be appreciated!

This is of course to a different shaped car front but I believe the principles are the same.

If your's is an auto - I found disconnecting the oil coolant pipes to be impossible without risking tearing the rad, so got a mechanic to carry out the work and he had sufficiently slim spanners. That said it still leaks...

Thank you. Mine is a manual but still hope there will be no major issues. I'm "learning by doing"

I think the main pitfall is deforming the rubber ring seals...

Yes, you'll need to remove the radiator in order to have enough room to extract the fan bolts.

On a manual car, removing the radiator is straightforward.
