V70 TDi ABS Light
Hi there,
My V70 runs like a dream but is coming up for its MOT at the end of the month and the ABS light has been on for the last few months. Doesn't bother me but it won't pass if it doesn't go out I don't think. Whats the most common cause of this? And best way to sort it? In all honesty I'm quite happy to take the bulb out but not sure how difficult this would be. I've read the control module on the ABS pump packs up and some places offer repairs on these, anyone with any experience of this. Many Thanks |

This is how I did mine, in pictures.
It's supposed to be an E5 socket to take the four screws out of the module but a 4mm socket fits. The lid isn't meant to come off but if you cut/break the flange off you expose the sealant that sticks it together and you can carefully cut through that. The commonest failure point is the pins that feed the power to the pump, you can resolder these after taking the conformal coating off the joints. From memory they are the two at top left in the picture. I used Tiger Seal to stick the lid back on again, it's strong stuff. There are also press-on fixings at the mounting bolt holes.

Thanks for your reply, might be worth my while taking the unit off then and breaking it open. I take it the car can still be used without it fitted, it doesn't work as it is, and can be tested to see if it works without sealing the whole unit back up!
When you opened the unit up, was it obvious where the problem was? Many thanks |

It was reasonably obvious to me, but I have worked in electronic inspection. If you look at the top left pin in the picture you can see a bit of a shadow around the base, that's a fractured joint. I think it's usually one or both of that pair but it's worth reflowing all the pins that carry a bit of current. That's the two I mentioned, the set of four thicker pins in the multiplug and the ones for the solenoids (or whatever they are). You can see that I've scraped the coating off them all ready to solder.
I don't know how the system would take to being powered up with the ECU missing. It's not hard to get the ECU out and back in again if you need more than one session at it.

If you get your ECU out and it looks like the top one in this picture you can have it. It worked when the car (99 V70 TDi without TRACS) was running and it is no good for my 850.

V70 TDI ECU unit
Hi Roody,
If you have a search on this forum there are quite a few guides on how to do this. It is a DIY soldering job and not too hard with a satisfactory result. If its not your thing then there were some people who offered to do it for about £50...... |

Hi Oliver, thanks for that reply. Had a quite look earlier and could put my hands on the right socket to undo the bolts. Happy to repair it myself, if I can get that sorted I can book it in for MOT. I've had the car for 5 or 6 years now, used to belong to my grandad from new so is a bit of a family heirloom.
