For the D5244T and T4 on the P2 S60, I found in Haynes that max MAP is 30.3 psi so just under 16psi boost at sea level.

Maybe the XC90 is allowed more and the data will be out there so maybe Haynes will clarify.
Maximum boost on the 163 BHP D5 (all cars) is 22 psi (approx 36 psi absolute) from memory.

Turbo diesels - even lames ones - use higher pressure than petrol engines.

I'd be interested to know the source of these figures and what maximum means.....
Is it maximum on a standard map or the maximum achievable by design?

Default smokey

V70 mk2 2002 d5 163hp (auto not that it matters)

was driving along, put my foot down and all of a sudden i hear this dreadful noise followed by a what looked like someone chucking a bucket of coal dust from the back of my car.

had a nose around, turns out id blown a hole in turbo inlet hose right next to the turbo about an inch long right next to the jubilee clip, so when the turbo started spooling it would suck air through the hole rather than the air box.(like letting go of a balloon)
i also noticed a significant buildup of fresh gunk around the sensor, which was able to be pulled out from the hose with a worrying little amount of effort. i guess this had been leaking for a while.

i limped a few miles to go grab a replacement from some chap on ebay, fit it and went for a test drive.

i still had tonnes of smoke, and car was well down on power.
it would go, then i guess the ECU would cut power due to airflow somewhere.
i pulled a stack of hoses, including that damn plastic one under the engine which is a common failure and all look fine.

turns out i had also split the intercooler turbo hose,
this tear was about 3 inches, bang in the center of the hose (drivers side).
taped it up temporarily, seems to have fixed the power and smoke issues.
