Default Felt or rubber oil seals?

Hi,

I have just bought Olga, a 144S registered in January 1970. B20 engine.

Does anyone know for certain if she originally had felt oil seals, or rubber?

Thanks

John

Almost certainly felt, as my '71 144 did when the front one blew spectacularly halfway across the New Forest at midnight one November day many years ago (don't ask what I was doing there)! Result - all the oil outside the engine, but at least I realised something was up AND I had a torch with me, still it prevented any more rust under there! Long walk to all-night garage for a jug of oil!

Cheers Paul,

I'm going to swap it onto proper oil seals. I have the relevant holder for the rear main seal, just need to get the front cover machined for a rubber seal

The lip seals are very picky about alignment and the condition of the surface they are sealing against. The felt seals are much less fussy in both of these aspects. Yes felt seals do get compacted and harden up a bit over time as they get contaminated but new ones freshly oiled and regular oil changes will keep the oil from leaking out for another 100k, just as the old ones did. I would hazard a guess that more people who change to lip seals on an older engine suffer from further leaks than those who stick with felt ones. Less expensive too.
