Default Box on axle?

I have an 08 v50r and I was re-spraying the rear axle with under seal after small amounts of surface rust appeared (nothing major, just didn't look nice) when I noticed a weird box attached onto the top of the rear axle. Its solid metal (looks like aluminium/other white metal) and has no wires or pipes going to it, nor does it have any areas for anything to attach. you can see it in the center of the axle in the photo. Any ideas?

Just a weight where if you had an EOLYS tank for the DPF would go.

If you had one it would be instead of the weight (assuming it is a 2.0D)?

Hi
I have the 2.0D. There is the weight on the back axle and the Eolys tank as well. I assumed it was some kind of weight to stop resonance/vibration?? But my car has both.

if the 8th digit of the VIN is 5 you will have EOLYS to top up every 36000 mile service

Mine has an 8th digit of 4 and I couldn't see any tank or other pipework apart from the fuel lines from the filler. Is the tank noticeable? or is it well hidden

4 is Euro 4 without Particle filter and EOLYS so you will not have the tank .
It would have been fitted forward of the mass damper you mention between the two beams of the axle subframe , a black plastic tank of about 1.5 litres .
