They should not fail at all though, surely a poor design. Good job these pipes are not used on power steering systems. (I know they have electric steering assist)

There are dozens of pipes linked to the engine, every engine nowadays, from fuel to aircon. From vacuum capillary tubes to the exhaust pipe itself. This is the only one that bursts. Thank goodness. In fact this one is not prone to flex at this top joint, because it is long and very flexible and for the last 75% approximately of its routing, it is mounted on the engine. Contrast that with all the other pipes and joints which have short and relatively rigid flexy pipes [thinking of air con and to a lesser extent cooland hoses] linking the rocking engine to rigid parts of the body.

This is or was a seriously poorly engineered pipe. Unrepairable as well where it could have been designed to be easily repaired by swageing machines and parts found at almost any workshop. Nice flexible ½ “ hydraulic single wire hose and fittings would literally be a thousand times better.

Heard the compressor for the first time today but only by sticking my head by the front wheel and starting the car from my phone. Surprisingly quiet and only ran for three or four seconds.

Only had one go in two years the latest more robust has been OK so far, I check it everynow and then, if you look in engine bay straight after opening car (i.e. "waking it up") its easy enough to hear the compressor running and see the pipe slowly expand as the pressure builds up, compressor then stops.
