Battery dead, recommendations?
Went to start my C70 having not used it in about 2 1/2 months with the temperature at -4*C. So obviously I had my NOCO jump starter at the ready. Car totally dead, no lights, put on the jump starter and the interior lights worked but even that isn't enough to get it started. And again the electrics are totally dead once the jump starter is removed.
At first I was surprised because I thought, for some reason, there was a Bosch battery in the car but it turns out it's an EXIDE one so i'm not surprised after all.. Anyway, what batteries do people recommend? I know getting totally cheapo one is a false economy, so I'm looking at Yuasa / Bosch / Volvo. I'm just unsure on the max size of battery that will fit in, current one is 270x170x170mm. Cheers

For me, it's a no-brainer.
Bosch S5 Car Battery 096 77Ah - the 096 refers to the footprint of the battery. This will fit all 850 and V/S/C70 models. I've always used Bosch as replacements for many years and never had to change one - seem to last forever. My T-5R had a nearly new (3 months old) Volvo 60Ah battery when I bought it which went bad on me just a couple of weeks after buying the car so in went the Bosch S5 about 5 months ago. No problems since. If your battery is deep discharged, not only won't it hold a charge or recharge again but its internal resistance will have risen sharply which apparently can give a problem (so my electrician mate tells me) if you try to boost start the car with a boost starter. It's something to do with some of the output going to the dead battery rather than the starter but at that point I glazed over. I'm sure there are electrical wizards on here who could explain it all. Regards John

I actually rate Exide batteries really highly - I've never had a problem with them.
In fact I bought an Exide EA770 (760CCA 77Ahr) for my S70 T5 a few weeks ago - this will fit your C70 as well. I paid £63 for it - it came from Tayna via Amazon, but it seems to be advertised at a much higher price now.

I have a Varta Blue Dynamic E11 battery on the C70, 096 footprint and no problems at all. Purchased online from batterymegastore.co.uk
I have a Bosch S5 on the V40 same 096 footprint and no difference in either of them.

Cheers guys, adviced much appreciated. And yes I have heard even if I could get this battery to start once it would cause a huge strain on the alternator and probably end up causing other problems.

Yuasa or Duracell if you want the best on the market.. Varta avoid like the plague these days as well and truly build to a budget with paper thin plates.
Oldham is just a name these days and junk No idea on Exide Size wise 096 and the biggest Cca you can get. |

Battery
096 is the correct battery (size/terminal layout and clamp style) and any reasonable make will do.
Have successfully fitted a larger battery, but it involved moving a cable locating clamp at one end of the battery tray and needing a different battery clamping method, and is a real struggle to fit or remove the larger battery to the point another pair of hands can be useful. Only did this as I had a larger battery available as a spare. Had an ECP Lion brand 096 in the Golf (2.3l V5 engine) which lasted five years and was replaced when it went flat. Turned out that the alternator was faulty so the Lion is used as a good emergency spare. Bought a Bosch S5 for a BMW X5 and had several electrical problems. Eventually decided the battery was the problem and returned to Halfords ready for an argument. They attached a Bosch tester and immediately, without a murmer, agreed to replace the battery (and admitted they had receive a faulty batch). The important point is to buy a reputable make from somewhere (preferably local) who can give good customer service should something go wrong.

Does this look a good choice then? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/S5-008-Bo...IAAOSwCVReowEM
It's a few quid cheaper off the same business' eBay shop vs their own website :S

Have you considered the main dealer? You might be surprised. I needed a battery for my old '03 S40 1.9D, back in 2016, with most motor factors quoting anywhere from €90 to €110. Main dealer €115. I went for genuine as the original battery lasted 13 years (on a diesel) and I think the new one came with a 2 year guarantee.
C70 p/n 30745774 (520A) and 30745775 (600A). I guess the 600A being for the convertible. I'd be interested to know what FRF can quote on those numbers. Pic below S/V40 p/n 30658162 (made in France) superceded by 30659798 (made in Germany).
