Pretty sure they didn't come with filters at any point.

Now the VW Passat were notorious for pollen filter leakage. Easy to fix but extremely common.

My driver's side on the 240 is dripping wet after being sat this week in the rain. Not been driven so I know it's not coming up through the floor. Sill drains are clear, and weirdly the sound deadening sponge under the carpet was only wet on top. So must be dropping onto it from above....

If it's the driver's side - check the hole in the firewall where the bonnet pull goes through - there may be corrosion and rusting through upwards of this. This same problem is currently sending me close to going insane.

The only thing that's stopping me thinking that, is that the undermat wasn't wet underneath. It's almost as though the water landed on top of the carpet...

Look under the dashboard at it's furthest point away from you :~ just under the windscreen area, you should see a sort of shallow shelf that follows the body/screen towards the "A" posts.

Water entering the screen can form on top of the above and then travel sideways towards the post. It will then run down behind the plastic kick plate- between this and the inner post card cover: if the cover is damaged the water will also enter the "A" posts.

Try a hose or can over the screen to check for the above- if it is this? do a search for windscreen drain holes.

If you remove the door trims (push on) that run along the sill tops and also hold the carpet in place you will find a run of large grommets, pull these away to inspect-treat & clean out the inner sills.

The top layer of carpet underlay is waterproof but only a matter of time before it gets to the sponge side- Bath Time!

Good Luck.
Bob.
(The above is for the '88 model- others?)

Default Plug those holes

Bob Medows is right. I've been plugging mine for at least 30 years with no problems and giving careful instructions to the window guy.

245 GL 1989 LPG. 823,000 miles. Just sold it for £4250.
End of fine driving experience.
