1972 144 for sale
Okey doke,
here is my 1972 144 Deluxe auto. I bought this one from a chap on Retro rides earlier this month where it had been languishing in his garden in Bristol for several months having been used as a daily driver by him last winter. I ended up buying it with a bottle of wine inside me and now I have it, and like it, I have some serious restoration repairs to fund on my 1990 Golf convertible and my 1955 Moggy so I have to be honest with myself and ask whether or not I a/ need this beast and b/ have spread my resources too thin? So, I'm offering it up for sale here - I don't need to but I am being realistic. It's a 1972 (free tax) Volvo 144 Deluxe 110000k on the clock MOTs going back to 1992 - last 15 years the car has covered about 15k since 1993 taxed till November 10 MOT till 27th November 2009 The car is original except for the following: 14" 244 steel wheels rather than 15" 144 ones An SU Carb sourced from a Rover P6 A K&N air filter as the Volvo air intake won't fit the SU's side intake - I suspect the K&N dumps a wee bit too much air into the carb and the car cold do with a good tune so - the good bits: solid body reasonable paint 95% of trim there starts and pulls well completed 150 miles from Brisol to Herts no problem and am considering driving her to edinburgh tomorrow what needs doing: when I got her the previous owner had broken the indicator stalk and switch - I drove her back from Briston sans indicators - that was fun! and have sourced a spare but as an emergency have replaced the stalk with a 3 way rocker switch for the indicators and have moved the headlight full beam to a rocker on the main switch gear panel - this means that at least the car can be driven safely at night and in traffic. she needs a good tune she is running a bit hot - the heaters must be turned up to cool her down just now - I was going to flush the system and will try and do this. The radiator looks OK bust I suspect it hasn't been flushed out for several years - the car does not overheat however provided the heaters are on the off side front brake is grabbing and sticking - you can hear it whine and braking hard the car will grab to the left the interior is in good nick, no broken plastics with the exception of a single 4" suncrack on the top of the dash the rear mister switch and the hazard swithces have both lost their holding clips and are loose - however, I suspect both are knackered anyway as they also act as the relay for those functions so could probably do with being replaced - especially the hazards the front seats both have vinyl damage - the passenger onehas several cracks - not drastic yet the driver one has a split - the car comes with a spare seat in reasonable contition with the exception of a split seam. The vinyl damage is age and sun related the back seat is good the carpets are good the last chap did all the welding required including floor pans, sills and boot (see pics) - the car could do with a good rustproffing before the winter. The car is based in Harpenden or Edinburgh (Harpenden at present) and I am offering her as seen for £600ono. If the car is still unsold by the time the MOT is due I will MOT and either keep her or list at £850. the front seats have

2 other things
1/ the carb gets condensation when hot and as a result she is not a great hot starter - as mentioned , she would benefit from some carb fettling 2/ for some reason there are no rear seat belts??/

Very nice motor scooters, would love to have this off you, but cash being the way it is there is no way I could convince her in doors that it is a good idea. Shame as have been wanting a 144 for a while, and this one looks a very tidy one.

That was me who had pulled out of the ebay deal.
If you were told that I had money probs that was incorrect, I was admitted to hospital with a serious heart condition almost immediately after winning the auction so was unable to commit to the sale, must have been the excitement!!. I am fine now. However I have no space for another motor! It does look like a fabulous car so good luck with the listing. |
