Default Preferred Wheels and tyres for V50

Hi guy's,

I currently have the Medusa 18" wheels which could do with tyres and a refurb.

Before splashing out on these, is there a wheel size which works better on the V50?

Also, is there a recommended tyre for our cars?

I do a lot of Motorway and enjoy b road driving

If sharp handling is important to you then stick with 18 inch wheels. If you prefer a softer comfy ride then drop to 16s if you can.

With regard to tyres - this is an endless subject. My advice would be look at the labels carefully - the V50 can be a noisy car some hard 18 inch tyres and check carefully wet weather behaviour.

Goodyear efficient grip is a very good all rounder summer tyre.

Have a look on eBay - there is a seller in Blackpool who sells sets of refurbished wheels at very reasonable prices.

I was toying with the idea of 17" wheels, what tyre size do they use on 17" wheels?

205/50R17 is standard on the Volvo 17x7 rims.

My old S40 and our current V50 ran/run 17s. The best all round summer tyres I had amongst many in the last 13yrs were Pirelli P7 Cinturato (not the standard P7 which was awful) and the Continental SportContact 5.

We now run Michelin CrossClimates which are excellent tyres but a little bit of a compromise if very sporty driving is your thing.

I have some Radar (Chinese) summer tires 205/55 R16 and Continental
ContiIcecontact 195/65 R15 studded tires.
In winter I prefer as narrow tires as possible. They are more stable to drive on snow and groovy roads.

I run 225/40R18 on my Medusas, much more common size than the 215/45R18 that Volvo recommend. I don’t have any issues with the wider tyres.

When I was doing my research, I did read that if you run the 18 inch wheels the software is updated to take into account the larger rim size when calculating speed. Something to bear in mind if you go for smaller wheels. No idea how true that is though!

Thank you for that, I had no idea that the recommended tyre size was 215/45/18

My car came with the 225/40/18's which you are running.

I don't know enough about the speedo to know if it is software driven or mechanical.

I had some 18 midirs 225/40/18 tire on it. Now have two sets which run a lot better.

Have some summer wheels which have 235/40/18 and these are the best so far and make the car grip so much better.

In the winter I drop down to 17s for a bit more comfort on winter tires which are 205/50 R17

Hope that helps

Depends what you are after though.

Just another variation.....I had 18 inch Medusas but I didn't like the lousy choice of 215/45 tyres, the price you have to pay and the hard ride. I got hold of some 17 inch wheels and instead of 205/50s I fitted 215/50s. These are almost exactly the same overall diameter as the 215/45/18 setup so no software update was required. Ride is better and the price is the same or less than 205/50 tyres (another odd size). I did inform my insurance company and they were OK with the change.
