I know, but as already mentioned, it's not the same as a "real" one.

I like a real one, you can then see how much to add, or how much someone has overfilled it.

With regards to the smell of the oil, if it smells of diesel then there is a problem with DPF regeneration and diesel is finding its way into the sump. A topic which has been discused a great deal with previous Volvo models on this forum, so another reason to have a dipstick.

By the way I change the oil every 7,500 in the Honda, and its mileage now stands at 133,389.

Pete.
Hi Pete. Don’t wanna take the the topic sideways (oil discussions on auto forums are second only to winter tire arguments ) but here’s a quick reply. Like said- 15-20 yrs ago - in dyno-oil (mineral..) times- with low-compression atmospheric engines- color and smell were good indicators.

There’s several factors that cause oil to get dark- yes, oxidation due to high mileage being one of them- but also high temperatures (particularly on turbo engines, where oil is used to lubricate the impeller(s)/shaft(s)), soot (on diesels but on petrols as well..), but in modern oils it’s mainly due to additives. Quite the opposite applies to modern synthetic, high additive content motor oils- dark is good. Dark means oil is doing what it’s designed to do.

Oil color will differ depending on on brand, viscosity, and additives used- but also on engine design (catalytic/particulate separation/EGR method used, oil drain/filter location/design, etc). Without a full engine flush- there will be a significant amount of old oil leftover post draining in most modern engines- sufficient to turn any new oil dark after only a few minutes of run time. Etc, etc.

As for DPF regeneration and oil dilution- I’d say a digital oil level gauge (much more precise than any mechanical dipstick..) is a much better indicator of a problem with oil dilution than sniffing a good ole’ dipstick.

But as said- I feel the nostalgia myself, and sometime miss the “old school” methods of keeping an eye on what’s going on under the hood..

Exactly, although I think the electronic dipstick can indicate an overfill.

Favourite = headlights
Worst = crappy start stop that cuts in too soon and too often.

No sunglasses holder on the V60 which I think the person has. I have a V60 and I don't have a sunglasses holder anywhere.

That's unfortunate!
The XC90 has one, the V90 also seems to have one (as seen in the manual).
