Default Knock from front nearside ?

Occasional knocking sounds like its coming from front nearside wheel area.
Garage did not find anything. How do I test top spring pad for possible problem?
thanks

There's no definitive test - but look under the bonnet to see if it the top washer sits higher on that side - a sure sign the top mount has failed.

Default when does it occur?

Hi is it general knocking when driving over bumps, or when manoeuvring/breaking?
Ian

It's on uneven surfaces, quiet when manoeuvering etc....just passed the MOT today, garage took it for a test drive and heard it....but nothing found wrong with suspension!
I was thinking of putting a small video camera in the wheelarch.....

No, the washers look the same....but the 'cruciform nut' (under the strut top locking nut) was only finger tight....but Knock is no better after tightening it!!

The spring seat starts cracking underneath, then the crack spreads upwards - ultimately the center sleeve will completely detach. This is what it looks when quite cracked, when I was turning the steering, this one top of the strut was moving up and down (compared to the other side which was in good condition)

How many miles on it ? Clunks also come from worn/softened subframe bushes and it's not really visible unless one of those 18mm bolts is retired and the bush center sleeve is pushed sideways - it will appear very soft. Also these bushes may start leaking - my front ones do so, perhaps are oil filled
