Default 'Missing holes' in Victor Reinz head gasket

1998 V70 T5 B5234T3

Just compared my original gasket with a new Victor Reinz.
There are three apertures missing from the Reinz gasket (see photos).
Observations welcomed!
Thanks.

The usual reason for holes "missing" on head gaskets is that quite often the coolant flow and direction is determined by the gasket, not the casting, by design. Quite often you will find an engine that has been developed further during its production with a modified gasket to overcome localised overheating problems from other parts of the block/head where the coolant is being bypassed.

In this case, I think it would be worth going straight to the horse's mouth and speak with Viktor Reinz directly, or through your supplier of the gasket, to find-out whether this modification applies to your engine or not.

Just because you have holes in the adjacent block/head faces, does not imply that coolant should be flowing there.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the observations!

Interesting perspective, SwedishBus. I've already emailed Victor R, awaiting a reply. Maybe I won't get my drills out and modify it...

Went to 'the horse's mouth', Clan: Volvo don't supply a 'kit', you have to identify the gaskets individually. V.Reinz appears to be a reputable make, and (supposedly) offer the complete set, so I went for that (the set's part number matches my engine in their catalogue).

Also discovered that (at least) 3 out of the 4 camshaft seals supplied are incorrect. Now I'm wondering whether the valve seals are the correct diameter (for 7mm dia valves, whereas I've seen 6mm [9454610] linked to the same engine).

So I'm thinking I'll order the head gasket (depending on VR's reply), cam seals and valve seals from Volvo. I think the other gaskets (manifolds, coolant, throttle body...) are the same from that base engine. If not, I'll cross that bridge before I burn it...

Thanks again. Much appreciated.
