Fuel filter replacement
Hi I have a 59 registered V70 2.0D . Noticed it missfiring a bit when cruising and has recently cut out twice.
Came to the conclusion the filter would be on top of the engine but when I went looking found it was not there. If anyone can tell me where to find it and any help with procedures to follow when changing it I woud be happy. Thanking you in advance. Bob the Agedbrit. I am a retired engineer and feel I am getting the hang of it. ! |

No idea about your variant but on my D5 its by the rear axle, slightly off centre towards the o/s. Mine is a plastic housing and I bought the right tool to fit rather than potentially cracking it and wasting time and money fitting a new housing.

I used a 32mm ring spanner on my D5 which had the filter under the wheel arch but I know there's a proper tool for it, I happened to have a 32mm ring spanner handy. Has to be a ring spanner, not open ended!!

Hmmmmm ............. yes ......... I also have an 09 plate 2.0D and have changed the filter twice on routine servicing. The filter is up beside the fuel tank on the drivers side. A 32mm ring or filter spanner will do the trick, as there is not enough room to get a socket in there. Now the interesting bit ............. Volvo blurp will have you believe that the engine is self priming ........... I can assure that it isn't and they can be awkward to prime. First fill the filter bowl when you change the filter ....... then on the left hand side of the engine bay you will see the flow and return connectors. Disconnect the return and suck fuel with a fuel priming bulb from the engine side until there is a solid fuel flow and no air. It is cheaper to buy a marine outboard primer bulb than the priming kit that is often sold by motor factors ! .......... does the same job. Slight hesitation with this engine is normal under certain conditions when doing between 1500 - 1800 rpm ............ there is plenty about it on the Ford & Peugeot forums. |

I tried to change mine at the weekend. Followed the haynes manual ensuring the car had about 1/4 of a tank (slightly less, JUST slightly!) remaining.
However, when I undid the filter housing it was as if I'd opened the fuel tank and I got diesel everywhere! I quickly tightened it back up! Should a lot of diesel come out when I undo the filter? |

My D5 is easy to prime, just cycle the ignition on and off for about tens seconds three or four times, fuel system will be primed no problem, no misfire or cutting out.
Works for me! To answer your question I just noticed, there is a drain on the bottom of the filter normally, there will be a fair bit of fuel in there!

Yes lots of diesel will come out, use the 19mm drain socket first then 32mm to remove the housing. Keep the diesel and if it's clean sieve it out will filter paper and use it how you want it or discard it.
To prime just press the start button and hold until ignition comes on (position 2) and wait for all the idiot lights to go out before starting the car. Should start up fine straight away. If it stalls just start it again, it should be fine the second time.
