2001 C70 2.0T coupe manual with 2005 C70 engine swap?
I have a very low mileage 2001 C70 2.0T manual with a ETM in need of replacement and a clutch on its last legs. I have recently acquired a 2005 C70 convertible 2.0T manual with sound engine/transmission but other terminal problems. Can I please seek advice over the prospect of an engine and transmission swap from the 2005 car to the 2001 coupe? What would I need to swap to ensure compatability? Is this even possible on ME7 cars? I have access to all parts.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I wouldnt even try to engine swap these cars, mainly cuz they dont worth as much as the engine swaps usually cost... Either way id go w the convertible until you can find another coupe, or some other solution...
Im sad to say it, as a c70owner myself... On the bright side ill sell mine around the end of aug, so if you fancy upgrading from a 2.0 to a t5 with other kind of problems, let me know:/

Silly question maybe...why not just repair/replace the etm with contactless one and a new clutch ?

Cost would be a determining factor - £400 -£600 for a new clutch and £100+ for an ETM rebuild. The car (coupe) cost me little more. The convertible parts are available to me at no additional cost, so this has raised this potential option. I actually love the C70 coupe. It is spec'ed with a factory lowered sports suspension and the BBS alloy and when it was running gave excellent mpg on a decent run. |

Money...always a factor to consider.
I suppose this swap depends on whether you are able to do it yourself, if not the cost could be more that a new clutch etc. If it was me I would be tempted to go for it using the ecu from the donor car (not sure if it need coding), but I do have the benefit of an engine lift etc |

Thanks for that. I suspect I would need more than the ecu from the donor car, but am struggling to find anything definitive on that point. If anyone can advise, that would be much appreciated.

It should be a straight swap.
The original car is a 2.0lt manual and the donor engine is a 2.0lt manual, so the engine/gearbox combo should be a straight fit. Both cars are ME7 so no issues converting from a manual throttle to electronic. The only thing I can see being different is that Volvo increased the power output on the 2.4 and T5 engines in 2003 - the 2.4 increased from 197bhp to 200bhp, the T5 increased to 245bhp. Not sure about the 2.0lt, but the 2003> is 163bhp. Given the small increases in power - this would be achieved by tweeking the ecu rather than redesigning the engine. I would check the power of the 2001 engine against the 2005 and also check the part numbers on the respective ecu's- if they match then no problem, if not, use the 2005 ecu instead of the original. You know that the 2005 engine runs with the matching ecu so should also when fitted in the 2001 coupe. Doing the swap should be a rewarding and cheap result, if getting done professionally, I would opt for repairing the coupe and part out the convertible.
