Default Main Beam Lights Remain On:~

Volvo 240 1988 2.0L Estate: ~
Just noticed this evening that the main beam headlights are reaming on with no change as the steering column stalk is activated i.e. lights are stuck on high beam (main beam dash light stays illuminated) reading up some mail it seems that the fault could be the solenoid that is in the engine bay- referred to as a stepped item?
Any points prior to looking at the unit.
Thanks Bob

Morning , Your problem sounds like the changeover relay sticking . This IF i remember accurately is a silver , rectangular relay that sits on the inner wing behind the battery .

These are getting hard to buy new , but try these people

Or try this pdf of info to substitute an alternative relay.

https://www.davebarton.com/pdf/headl...ymockLATCH.pdf

I have not checked if that alternative relay is [still] available ....

Or. Are there still instructions anywhere to change the dipping to the design that does not risk switching on as main beam after flashing the headlamps? I've seen it said that can be done. Does it involve changing the relay?
.

That would be really useful if possible.
It's a stupid bit of design in my view, as it's impossible to tell if you are going to dazzle someone before you turn the lights on. (Unless you count all the times you have flashed the lights since you last used the headlights, and then gave another flash to make up an even number!)

Much better would be:
a) a separate main beam switch, not shared with the flasher
b) a relay that always reverted to dip when you switch the lights off or after flashing
c) if the main beam warning light could some how always show even when the lights are off.

Default Further Question:~

Checked & cleaned the wiring today but the main beam continues to be lit- further question before looking for a solenoid, the main beam steering column switch (pull-push) will not work as normal i.e. pulls up & springs down as usual but will not click down – I’m assuming at this stage that it is because the solenoid isn’t working? Or is it a faulty column stalk switch?
Thanks Bob

It doesn't click down, only up. Don't try and force it down - you'll break it.

It's spring-loaded and when you click it up it flashes the lights, or if the headlights are on it cycles the stepper relay through main/dip.
That's what's so silly about the design - it keeps on cycling main/dip even when the lights are off, so even if you left the lights on dip, there's a 50/50 chance they'll be on main next time you turn them on.

It sounds as if your relay isn't working or is sticking. It could just be corroded terminals where it plugs in - sometimes just waggling it fixes it.
I think, although I haven't done it, it is possible to open the can and clean up the contacts etc.

Thanks Clifford: ~ cleaned the exterior contacts without success- I now get the action of the switch! I may have a go at opening the relay and use as a spare if it works? Just about to make contact with another member who has descent spare — so fingers crossed.

When my headlights were stuck on main beam it was a faulty stalk.

Replacement indicator stalk fixed.
