Ahh
Finally - I got taken some photos of my beautiful 164 TE.
Conversion from BW 35 to AW 70/71 is over and works surperb.

Photos can be seen here; http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/10...?sort=3&page=1

Driving very nice. But Ill need to change bushings in rear axle, but then there is also something to do in the winter.

Good evening -

Hello

Thanks.

Yes the color is amazing! It is not blue, nor green - but a mix. Incredible very nice and "live" in the sunshine.

Good evening -

It seems to have been one of the more popular colours, came in for '73 model year I think.Id like to do the gearbox conversion to my car- alas funds don't permit it! on steep hills it is never in the right gear.

Hello

There are VERY big difference from the org. BW 35 and the "new" AW 70/71 - nice to drive around. 80 km. / Hr and only approx. 2,000 RPM and not like before by more than 3,300 RPM.

Do it! It takes time to find all the parts and it costs the unfortunately too.

Good evening -

What was wrong with the BW35?
Was the gearbox swap a matter of plug & play or did stuff need to be modified?

Hello,
Lovely car, interesting grille badges.
Lovely interior, like the 'EL. ANT DOWN' button, have one in my S70, but not as classy as the 164 - just a small image of an aerial.
Cheers

Hello

BW 35 "box" was tired - has hardly been running for about 25 years and they can not liked.

So there came a "new" box on - an AW 70/71, and it works super, much better fuel consumption and much lower revs.

You will need this parts;
A AW 70/71 with outer speedometer outlet. They sat on the first 240, buy the "whole" gear box with all accessories, cable wires, switches, etc.
A conversion "flange" between the engine block and gearbox. Can be bought here in DK, cast in aluminium.
New oil cooler hoses. Get them done at a truck repair shop - very cheap.
A new and shorter drive shaft (from the first 240) - it must be balanced.

Maybe the middle rubber ball bearing has to be moved to fit the new drive shaft, since '74 is a bit of a mutant, since it is a model between a 164 and a 240, so there may be several different solutions.

Since a 164 with BW 35 run with a different rear axle than a 240, it will be a little slower at the start - but it's not a race car we have LOL.

Gog day -

Hello

Yes it is cute.

When I first read the instruction manual, that the antenna could be adjusted manually with the button in height for optimum sound - I thought it did not fit, but must now admit that it fits.

a really nice 164 indeed. some chrome headlight rings would really stand out on the teal front end of that car. i thought about the aw71 conversion for my 1st 164 back in the early 90s but then i got one with the m410 and was very happy with it. you should consider changing the diff ratio from 3.31 as this really was only for the auto (i think you can get up to 3.73 for the 164 then 140 axles will be 4.1, 4.3 and 4.56.) this will also make the car more responsive at freeway speeds as the overdrive on the aw 70/71 was really tall (0.69.) on my last 240 i sourced a aw72L which is from the 16v 740s as 1st gear is 2.83 rather than 2.45 and overdrive is 0.73 rather than 0.69 and the difference was very noticeable, including a full 1l/100km improvement in fuel efficiency.
