volvo drift

does a volvo 340 gl 1.7 have a limited slip diff, im looking for a suitable car to drift, i saw a nice blue 3 door what looked like a 340, drifting at santapod, is a 340 gl 1.7 capable of this? i have always owned fords but thought i would try a volvo out as i was impressed with the one from pod. if you have can give me a list of good points and bad points of the 340 gl 1.7, and if its the drifting queen im looking for, or is it a different volvo that looks similar to the 340. you replies will be much appreciated thanks.

Hello and goodmorning, first I'll say hello, and secondly expect some hostile responses to using a 340 as a drifter, there are alot of good cars ending up as erffectivley scrap.

The best place for parts to turn it into a drifter would be on the volvo 300 forum:

The process to turn it into a drift machine is lowering blocks for the rear springs, and lower and stiffer springs and shocks for the front.

The best way to lock the diff is via MIG spec, ie weld it up, very easy to do, and yes the 1.7 is more than enough to drift, infact it is the ideal car for it.

Strip it out completely put the parts on here fit a hydraulic handbrake and enjoy, but please if you find a low mileage car with a good body maybe offer it here for sale before it turns into another drift car, there are plenty of ropey examles around fit to drift, I drift a 200 for fun

im sorry if i offended anyone, and i can appreciate not ruining a minter/classic, meerrely to learn to drift in an old car in its last year possibly badly welded shell with a half decent engine. rear wheel drive cars are meant to go sideways, eg sierra cossies mk1 mk2 escorts, granny cossies, but rest assured nothing decent will go to waste. thanks for the reply.https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/images/icons/icon7.gificon7.gif

Mate,
I learned to drive in a Volvo 340 1.7 it was my first car and learned so much from it. I really enjoyed the sideways action, welded the diff and stiffened things up!
In my opinion its by no means a light balanced drift car but superb fun for the money, it taught me a lot about controlling oversteer, handling was absolutely appaulling.

It also had 14,000 miles from new when I had it and still smelt like new, it was my grandfathers! Was my pride and joy.

A two cars later I had a s14 200sx a different kettle of fish, and price I accept, but if you are really interested in drifting there is no contest.

Leave the 300's for the sentimentals!

I have a volvo 340 1.7 sedan in gold with 46000 on the clock and it loves drifting welded diff lowered mini lites it is absolutely mint the only problem with them the engines dont seem to last just blown it to peices but about to put a renault 19 16v in it then it will be fun!

I think you're doing something wrong if you're routinely blowing up engines. Even the weaker Renault units can take one hell of a lot of abuse and not complain.

I don't think there's much hostility towards drifters. A lot of us use the cars hard in different ways. Just do us all a favour and give the rougher cars a hard life. There are plenty of suitable drift cars, but for some unknown reason it's the minters that the drift guys seem to like crashing into things :-D The few minters left deserve a bit of pampering.
