I wish I'd video'd us trying to get it into the parking space last night! We live on a steep hill with very few parking spaces but I managed to get one with my wheelie bin. The tow truck sat in the middle of the road, blocking it, with big yellow flashing lights, and we tried to get enough juice into the battery to reverse the car in. The b****** who lives over the road wouldn't move his car because there was nowhere else to park so we blocked the road for about an hour with the car half in and half out of the space. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who drove down the road and expected the truck to move, and for us to move the car so they could go down!!
We ran the tow truck battery down in the end, and he had a dodgy connector so it was just one thing after another really. I'm hoping its no more expensive than the alternator, and will hopefully get it fixed. As to the engineer at my Volvo garage saying I should look to changing it in, he said that he thought it looked like some expensive bits may be on their way out. I don't think he has his eye on it, he probably gets some in that are a lot better looking than mine!! (Someone used it as a dancing table in the summer and it has some interesting dents in the roof and bonnet ) Oh well, Happy Christmas everyone and thank you for your help. Claire |

sounds like a failed alternator to me - especially given how the car died in stages. Happened to me on the autobahn north of Stuttgart 10 years ago in the outside lane travelling at 120mph in a Westfield SEIGHT - scariest moment of my life - fortunately I had enough momentum to get to the hard shoulder at 60mph
