I've a D5 V60. My daily commute is 7 miles each way, haven't had any EGR issues at all in my 7 months of ownership. Averaging 43mpg, does 55mpg on a long run.

Thanks for the responses, maybe a D5 is a potential for me but don't see that many of them compared to the D4. Yes, I do understand that people on forums are going to talk more about the bad rather than the good however the length of the ongoing thread on the EGR does make me wary.

You'll buy the D4 and then wish you waited for a good D5. Its a great engine with a lovely growl from those 5 cylinders.

I agree with Toprivetguns. I got a little lucky when my D5 turned up and had the full spec I wanted, but its really worth the wait, especially when I think back to how a D3 and D4 drove.

I moved from a 2010 V70 D5 (205) to the V60 D4, and up until the point that the EGR issues kicked off the D4 was better to drive, more responsive, more economical, quieter and generally a better car.

So if they could get the EGR/Cooler issues properly sorted I would be very happy with a D4 rather than a D5.

My boss has the 2.4D4 V60 Cross Country same age as mine, and I would would say that the cars are on a par for everything else. His D4 might be a bit slushier due to the auto box compared with the manual on mine.

I test drove a D5 V60 before buying my VEA D4 V60 and the D4 does seem to pull better, despite having about 30bhp less. Maybe less turbo lag, or maybe a better power delivery curve? Or maybe a poor example of a D5? But I believe the 4 pot is quicker 0-60.

Either way, the VEA EGR problems are inexcusable. I've not suffered problems in this regard (and the lack of a T-piece on the top rad hose implies that the updated cooler was fitted prior to my ownership) but I am having another engine problem where an exhaust oxygen sensor gets sooted-up and brings on the engine warning light (P014c), an issue also reported by several other forum members.

However the D5 is not trouble-free. The aux belt tensioner is known to fail, causing the aux belt to become entangled with the cam belt and - in some cases - destroying the engine.

I have a 2014 S60 D4 with the 4 cylinder VEA engine. It has done over 140,000 miles now. I have done 50,000 of those over the last 18 months and it has been faultless. i think it is a cracking engine, very smooth for a diesel and plenty fast enough. I do agree with those who say the MPG figures are quite exaggerated although in the summer at below 60mpg on the motorway I can achieve 70+MPG.

Andy.

Interesting - I had a 2016 XC60 FWD D4 with the VEA engine in and I've never known a car where the economy drops so noticeably when the temperature falls below about 7 degrees.

In summer I could average around 44 mpg, in winter (with winter tyres) it would drop to 37-38.

I think if you had owned the later twin turbo D5 (post MY11 I think) you would have had fonder memories....
