Wheel/tyre noises?
Hi,
New owner, only done about 1000 miles on my V50 '12 D3. I'm getting some occasional noises from the tyres/wheels and I'm wondering if they're normal (haven't had them on any previous cars). The noises are resonances that almost sound like when you hit the rumble strip at the edge of a carriageway, and happen at around 50-60 mph (depending on road surface), and go away when you get faster. Wheels are 17" Spartacus alloys (205/50 R17 W). Subjectively, the road noise in general is quite high in the cabin in general. Do I need to get the wheels re-aligned or something? Thanks! |

The first thing that comes in mind is the state of tyres, can you actually confirm those are ok, not weirdly worn, not put wrong way around (like outside to inside or agains the rotational pattern indicated on tyre) ? It could also be related to wheel bearings but havent heard that description before (rumble strip comparison) so my first question would be tyre threads.

I used to get a lot of rumbling noise on my old set of tyres.. got 2x worse when I then rotated the worst affected rear wheels to the front. I had bumps on mine (areas of worn and not so worn parts of the tyre). Completely went away when I got a new set of tyres (Michelin CrossClimates) and did a laser 4 wheel alignment.

Sounds like a tyre issue to me, I once bought a car that (unknown to me at the time) had been sat around with a flat tyre for weeks. I was getting a pat-pat-pat sound/vibration because there was a flat spot or weak spot on the tyre carcass.
Budget-type tyres can be noisy and even 'rumble' at low speeds, also some premium brands can become noisy as they wear closer to the wear markers.
