Isn't Volvo in the process of replacing all of the 5 cylinder engines over the course of the next three years?

Since 1992 my transport requirements have been met by an 850 and S60, I'm hoping an XC60 will do the next twelve years. So I have to choose between a new engine with 'issues' or an outgoing older one.

Almost no similarities be between the 5 pot Audi cast iron lump and the all aluminium D5.

The Penta D5 and the car D5 were introduced virtually at the same time ( 2001 )and are very similar but with different software and cooling for the Penta.

I know nostalgia is all the rage but to get nostalgic before it's gone or before we know it's going?

The origins of the VOLVO D5 go right back to the 960 3 litre Petrol 6 in 1990.

the 6 , 5 and 4 cylinder alloy units are exactly the same engine with cylinders cut off . The D5 is a "dieselised" version of the T5 if you like :-) . A 3 litre 270 bhp version D6 would have been rather nice .

Sure would.

My tortoise disappeared after one day but the warning light has now appeared. Third time in 25k. I believe some dealers are now saying to just keep driving rather than go in. I hope so, going to the dealers is a pain for me.

If you are told this, I would get this "advice" in writing. Protects you if something goes horribly wrong.

I have been told by a Volvo service manager that to meet Euro 6 emissions the D4 AWD engine had changes made to the operation of its EGR at low temperatures, so I'm even tempted to go for a 'new' 2015 MY 5 cylinder version. Is that too paranoid, and why hasn't there been more nostalgia for the 5 cylinder engine on this thread particularly the D4?

You can get nostalgic for the V70 XC70 if you like. Production has ended.

Unfortunately Volvo still is not offering a permanent fix. My dealer contacted me last week to book me in (CEL has been on since late October - I'm on my first replacement EGR valve & cooler).

I asked if this was the permanent fix, they said no - but as it's been 3+ months since I got the CEL, they didn't want to risk me carrying on. I've never had a driveability problem, no limp mode etc, and never seen a tortoise (I only have the standard dash so maybe they don't get 'em) but they are obviously concerned that long-term use with a CEL could lead to issues.

So I'll get the latest cooler, which the dealer hopes will tide me over to the next annual service by which time they hope (note - HOPE) to have the permanent fix.

That is bad advice , they get paid for doing the job so make some money from it at volvos expense .It makes no difference to them whether they do it or not .. Driving on with all that soot around due to the EGR system not working correctly is going to Block the particle filter and possibly the catalytic converter too . Who will pay for it? Not volvo ... It is your duty as part of the warranty contract to leave it in the hands of the dealer .. If they say what they have said then yes you need a letter from them posted to you to say that it is ok to keep driving it otherwise there could be implications for you later on .

I can understand them saying to bring it in a couple of days ,or after the weekend rather than immediately but longer term ... No ...
