At least one of my (new) tailgate hinges is leaking slightly... From your experience of doing this job, what's the likely source - insufficient DumDum (or equivalent) or not in the right place, or is the positioning of the rubber mat that the hinge sits on critical? Alternatively, do all 240s leak slightly hence the rubber drainage grommet in the wheel wells at the rear? That long hot summer we had was hiding this gremlin! Nick |

Nicholas:~ I haven’t replaced these hinges (yet) bit if I have to then I would probably try and use the original gasket or make one up – I have fitted roof rails to my 240 by using homemade gaskets (eBay rubber gasket sheet)
They shouldn’t leak! So back to the drawing board. I would use the Windscreen seal product mentioned in the previous post rather than Dum Dum for this application- if the hinge can just be loosened enough then you should be able to extrude a descent quantity between the roof & gasket and gasket& hinge (dry surfaces) bolt the hinge down but not fully- allow sealer to start to go off then fully tighten. Initially it will be a bit messy but you can wipe the excess off with white spirit or panel wipe as you neaten the edges up- once it goes off you can go over it again- this product remains flexible under the formed surface skin. Good Luck Regards Bob. |
