Default DIY Carbon Clean.. worked a treat

Just thought I'd share with everyone the great results I had with doing my own carbon clean on my 2004 V70 d5 which has just turned over 197k. I used a wallpaper steamer and connected it just before the Inlet manifold... On the J shaped pipe (euro 3 engine). Let the car run while pushing the accelerator to 2000 rpm. Did that for an hour. It was very fumey while doing it and left a big black mark on the floor. I then took the car for a long drive. Much more responsive, smoother and quieter. I was sceptical about this sort of treatment and didn't want to pay someone 100 quid to do this as I did before on a previous car. It cost me an hour of my time and it truly runs great.

Hi you do have to be very careful with water as it does not compress but steam is better as it is already a mist and it is hot,
So did you leave the pipe from the intercooler to the manifold disconnected
when running at 2000rpm for the hour ?

I've attached the pics of the location I inserted the steamer pipe and the pic of the mess made from the exhaust. It was at idle for 90% of the time I just pressed it to 2k revs now and again. I will track mpg this week , expecting a slight increase but for me it's just the overall feel I'm most impressed with

That doesn't look like much on the ground, where do you think all the rest of the carbon went?

I don't think you have a DPF, but presumably shifting carbon would clog up a DPF?

A proper carbon clean runs the engine on two solvents instead of diesel/petrol.
That said, im interested to hear the methodology and outcome of this...

This is pre dpf so nothing to worry about on that front. It was a real stink in the air, to the point it gave me a bit of a headache. I will monitor the mpg closely this week. I wonder if it could benefit from a second go in a few weeks time.

I didn't know this, I always thought it was posh tap water. I will report back on mpg at the end of the week. I won't be doing this on my V40 D4 190 though.

I opted to split the manifold on mine and do a full clean. There is usually a huge amount of crud in the intake.

I can't see steam cleaning that much of it out in all honesty considering how well stuck on it is
