Changed oil filter yesterday but rain stopped play in the middle of it all and couldn't remember if the new element was seated fully on the cap before I tightened it an hour later so it might have been twisted a bit. Had run the motor to check pressure etc and done a few test miles. So this morning the new element came out and was dry as in no oil dripping from it and no oil in the bottom of the housing. When the old ones come out they always drip a lot. Have I just discovered a way to tell how dirty the element is ?

Changed the oil & filter on my 2007 V70 D5 euro 4 today. Usually I'd expect to see a fair bit of oil in the filter housing and on the filter element when changing it - but there was hardly any oil in the housing.
Is this normal ?

This is normal. There will be a small amount of oil at the base of the filter housing after you remove the filter, but it disappears in no time. The filter itself can be removed without spilling a drop. It's definitely one of the cleanest filter changes you'll ever do.
