Default Turtle's made a run for it...

Can you believe it!!!!!

Car goes into the dealership first thing in the morning. Popped out tonight for a short journey and, horror of horrors, the turtle's gone into hiding and even the amber engine warning light has gone out. Earlier today I had another round trip to Edinburgh (to collect Mrs A from her overnight stay at the Spire Hospital - hence my frustration at the 'dependability' of my XC60) and the warning light was illuminated the whole way.

I am trusting that the fault code(s) will be stored in the car's electronic memory? I hope so. I took a picture of the display last night upon getting home so I will email it to the dealer tonight as proof.

Honestly, what is it about rattles, noises and turtles - they all tend to disappear when they know the car is heading into the dealership. It's been the same all through my life.

Patience!

Arianne

Wasn't it coming and going erratically the first time the EGR played up? Just part of the symptoms of a failing EGR?

TBH, the many instances now all merge into one another. There's been the turtle's attempt to join us for our 2014 Italian trip - foiled by the dealer just a few days before departure. Then the turtle successfully slipped aboard in 2015 for our Summer holiday in Switzerland, appearing just 30mls out of Calais and taking the shine off of that particular grand tour through The Alps. And this week it made a cameo appearance on a deserted stretch of rural road deep in the back of beyond before reappearing with a vengeance on the A68 on the very day we needed to get to the hospital on time for Mrs A's operation. These are just three of the most memorable instances amongst many.

It's the last straw. I've explained how we feel to the dealership. It's not their fault - they're part of the solution not the problem. It's Volvo but the local dealership are the only people actually listening.

I hope this week will see the fault rectified one final time. Then I can enjoy about 8mths of ownership before selling it on. And perhaps even a great experience in Norway shortly, followed by the Alps for skiing in December for one last foray.

Here's hopin'

What did the dealer have to say when you took the car in today?

With the catalogue you have can you come to some arrangement with the dealer now to offload the XC60 take an older, but more reliable XC90 D5 that they may have in stock and forget about turtles, dealer visits and whatever else until your new car arrives and agree a cost to change all up front.
Volvo are probably not interested but your dealership, if they want to keep your business, could be.

They've just called to say the work is all completed. This includes the new fix from Volvo, complete with the new pipework etc. The car's also had a software update. They are delivering it back to the house later today.

As you know, I have already confirmed my order for a 2017 F-Pace with the dealer. I have been very frustrated at the design fault from Volvo with the XC60 but I have been satisfied with the dealers efforts to fix the car and the communication from them. At times I think I have been a bit sharp with the dealer because they are the face of Volvo, although it's not their fault. Compared to other dealerships I have used (Audi, Ford & Vauxhall in recent years) the local Volvo dealer offers a personal and polite service.

I don't want to lose my XC60 early for another car. If this latest fix is the solution then I will be happy until the F-Pace comes in March. Let's hope it really does fix the problem and we can enjoy the last eight months or so of ownership trouble free (it'll probably be more like six months because we will sell the car as soon as we're back from our Austrian ski trip in January 2017).

Apart from the EGR related issues, the car has been reliable with absolutely no other fault whatsoever (even the weird retina blinding brightness of the TFT display resolved itself earlier). Clearly, my role in the ownership of this car from new has been to identify, test and resolve the EGR problem for someone else!

If you want to drop it off early there are direct flights from Cologne to Edinburgh ;-)
Only joking, I don't do hatchback or estate designs. My wife finds them useful. She has her car, I have mine.

Steering wheel is on the wrong side for you guys too! However, if the turtle reappears while we are on our final ski-drive holiday this Xmas then I will just leave it on your drive and pop the keys through your door.

Car has now been delivered and I have done a quick sprint. She seems fine and driving well.

Take care,

Arianne

It's the right side for me, I drive a right hooker and it makes no difference to my insurance.
I can't get on with LHD. I'm right handed but can I double de-clutch in a LHD ? Can I heck as like.

What is second nature in a RHD car is totally alien on the other side. Thankfully motorbikes are just normal.

Thanks to Rolls Royce putting the gear leaver on the left side of the driver with their early RHD non synchromesh cars that is no problem for me.
