Unhappy City Service causing a problem or.....

Hi, Newbie here so I hope i'm posting in the right board.

My husbands Volvo V40 D2 diesel has said City Service required since we bought it in March this year, the other day he was driving and it went into Limp home mode, no power steering, indicators not working etc. We took it into a Volvo dearler today for a diagnostics test (£160) and they are saying it needs a new CVM unit and reload for £855

We still have a waranty for another month and Volvo said they will ask if them if that will cover it (claim limit is £500) but said they might not as its not mechanical. They haven't mentioned any other problem.

So if its not mechanical is that actually what is causing the limp home mode?
has anyone else had this issue?

Don't really want to spend £800 on something that is just going to stop us crashing into someone at slow speed if we happen to not be paying attention
